Title: CDTV
Post by: Cyberus on September 13, 2003, 07:17:50 PM
Hi,
having hoped to use my A500 again, and finding that it is yellow as anything and the internal drive is a bit flaky, I was wondering about the possibility of picking up a CDTV instead...

I understand that the CDTV and the A500 have similar architecture...but how compatible are they?

Cheers,
Cyberus

I ran my CDTV as a computer for years, using a fair number of apps on it. But the hardware expansion is rather limited and thus constrains what apps are comfortable there. CDTV does in effect function as an Amiga 500 though, with a CD drive. I have Megachip inside, and keyboard and mouse adapters and floppy drive. I was going to get a 2.5 hard drive and interface but wound up traipsing elsewhere.

They are very similar but you cannot upgrade it with a500 parts they are as compatable as a 1.3 a500 but because of the cdtv,s internal cd rom drive you lose a bit of the 1 meg of memory which might stop some programs from running. There is a slot in the front of the machine wich is under a cover wich can take a memory card or elbox have a 2 or 8 meg memory  expansion . :-)

There is a jumper on the mainbord disabeling the CDTV roms and reverting the kickstart to the original version 1.3, complete with hand 'n' blue diskette.
This makes it 99.9999999% A500 compatible.
