Title: Oscillator Query
Post by: JimmySage on March 24, 2009, 09:22:39 AM
Hi

Does anyone know a source for a 14-pin DIL 50mhz oscillator? It's for a MBX 1230 XA board running an XC68030RC50B CPU, although currently its only running at 40Mhz. I've seen amigakit selling 64 and 66Mhz crystals but I suspect that these would just kill the chip.

Can 8 pin oscillators be adapted for a 14 pin socket? I've seen these very cheap on feebay.

Thanks
James

The pins are compatible so you could modify the 8pin DIL to run in a 14 pin DIL socket and vice versa.

Even though Amigakit is highly recommended, here (http://www.reichelt.de/?;ARTICLE=13716)'s another source.

Also, if you want a really good acceleration, you can buy a 56MHz crystal.

Those 12% faster card will make you very happy. ;-)

Shameless plug on the 56Mhz crystal:

PS. Shipping these is dirt cheap, even to the island.
PS. AmigaKit rocks, so buying from them is cool!
PS. Yes you can adapt a DIL-14 to a DIL-8 by just bending the pins "smartly". However I recommend fastening it with some tape or hot glue afterwards because otherwise it can come off and cause short cirtuiting.

I should be getting a 50Mhz today or tomorrow, but I may also have a look at these as well. I've got a spare 40Mhz CPU if I blow this one up!

On a similar note, how far can you clock a 68882 rated at 33Mhz? I've already a 33Mhz and a 40Mhz crystal.

I'd say 40Mhz. Past that maybe iffy. (and hot! :-D)
