Title: FYI - Ambery RGB to VGA
Post by: mdv2000 on March 24, 2009, 04:07:43 AM
I received mine in the mail today and tested with my A500 - it works perfectly!

RGB to VGA Adapter (http://www.ambery.com/rgbcgatovgac.html)

I also picked up a RGB to 15-pin female adapter from Amigakit.

Next, I had to use a 15pin female to male vga adapter from a local pc shop so it could hook right to the Ambery converter box.

BTW, the Ambery converter comes with vga to Component video cable, so you could hook you Amiga to a big screen tv!

Now my Amiga works great on a 15" MAG CRT I have had a while... once I get some more pennies saved up, it is time for a LCD for my A500!

Thanks

Sounds good.

What output resolution are you running at?

Keep in mind that if your Amiga is PAL then all the screens will not scroll very well as it performs 50Hz->60Hz scan rate conversion.

Also keep in mind that (like all external scandoublers) it is not 24-bit so you will miss a few colours in AGA games.

Oh, and Ambrey are not the makers of this device... just the shop. This is a Cypress CM-397 (http://www.cypress.com.tw/product.php?PId=87936&CId=010&CName=PC%20Multimedia%2FScan%20Converters&SR=0). It has been discussed many times over the years on Amiga.org

Shame the price wasn't just a little bit less (~$60) and it would be great.

alexh: who are you kidding. I bet you would find faults with the device even if it cost $20

Can't AmigaKit and/or Vesalia sell these things?

My monitor says its in 640x480 but the Amiga Workbench 1.3 doesn't take up the whole screen.  I think by Default the Amiga does 600x400 or something like that.

Also, I popped in one of my favorite games - The Killing Game Show - and it looked brilliant. If there is some color loss, I can't visible tell.  Looks as good as I ever remember the Amiga 500 way back in the 80's!

The packaging doesn't smell like new. Don't buy it!!

Might help if you tried a 24-bit AGA game rather than a 12-bit OCS/ECS game ;-)

And then you'd need something to compare it with. Colours are not "missing" they are rounded down to their nearest neighbour. The result is less details in colour shading.

I bought from this guy in 2008 or 2007. Very friendly and fast delivery. The scandoubler comes well packaged and have a good looking (solid and with good looking lines). When I turn on the first time the screens comes with two colors only. Need to press one switch in it to works correctly and the position is not memorized, so you need to press it again the next time you turn on the device. I don't know if it's flickerfixer because I never tested. I was satisfied with it until I get a internal scandoubler that is more pratical in my tower for me (no cables) althought it's a no flickerfixer version.

How well does it handle overscan?

So did you try any funky modes with this?

(cough)12-bit OCS/ECS(cough)

What color depth do this things manage? The spec sheet doesn't tell anything.

Does it display pixel-perfect S-Hires? How does it react to non-standard screens generated with HighGFX?
