AmigaXL ? You mean UAE for QNX ???

Why shouldanybody want to use that ?

I'mquite sure that Amithlon was the reason to buy AmigaOSXL
for the vast majority of costumers.

Moved to "Amiga emulation".  I've never used it, only heard of it.  By H&P isn't it?

@mikeymike

I must have been trying to access this very page whilst you were moving it - I was getting a strange "the forum/topic you have selected does not exist. Please go back and try again" message.

Good job I refreshed the browser, I was about to post about it...

@ Kronos

Yea, I got it last night, I dont know much about it yet except that it ran pretty fast when I booted it, I still have to screw with it for a little while to get used to it, not to mention read all the readme's

its good for those of us to screw with if we no longer have an amiga (like me)

You make that sound like a BAD thing. From what I understood it was quite fast, nice to work with, and for some people had some distinct advantages over quite nice Amithlon. Neither are chopped liver - though the unresolved situations reminded me of really bad ground round comprised mainly of suet and sawdust ;  }

I once considered buying it but settled for WinUAE in the end.  Amithlon and AmigaXL come on the same CD.  Amithlon is supposed to be faster but rather fussy about the PC, video card etc... it's running on.  Also it can only use Amiga drivers for printing etc...  AmigaXL is supposed to be compatible with more types of PC configuration but slower than Amithlon.  It is able to startup QNX progs from the Amiga workbench, giving some extra options for web browsing, printing etc...   Another option is(was ?) Amiga Forever which is like an improved WinUAE.  There was some controversy around this H&P, distributors of AmigaXL/Amithlon and Bernie Meyer, maker of Amithlon.  I don't want to get in the middle of that discussion but I think that's what finally stopped the development of the progs.

It was not a bad idea, but it turned out to be bad in the end. The guy who did the porting for H&P left them after the project was completed and they had no one else who knew what they were doing. Worse, they failed to deliver the source code despite it supposedly being released under the GPL. The result was that bugs which showed up in UAE and JIT emulation after the project was completed were never fixed for AmigaXL the way they were for WinUAE and Amithlon. Furthermore, while QNX did offer a better range of supported hardware initially, there was no support with problems and there has been little significant driver development at OS level since.

AmigaXL was relying on QNX as a desktop environment, but QNX RTP is not aimed to satisfy the requirements of a desktop environment. It is mainly intended as a development platform.

In tests it was proven that AmigaXL was slower than WinUAE which in turn was slower than Amithlon. Taking the two UAE ports (AmigaXL and WinUAE) into direct comparison, there is little to recommend AmigaXL, which comes second on price, speed, hardware compatibility, support and development.
