Hello,
I have finally assembled my new Sam and obviously it has no Amiga style floppy drive. I also have a newer (floppy based) copy of Aladdin 4D and would like to run it on the new computer. How do I do this? Also, is there any decent way to run adf images directly on the Sam?
BTW, I am loving the new Amiga and OS4.1!

ADFs seem to be the best way to go, here. There's a file on Aminet that allows you to mount virtual drives, for ADF files. Works wonders. Used it on my old Amithlon box, all the time. Can't remember the name of the app to save my life, though and it required a bunch of additional libs.
-
I would definitely be interested in that file name if you could find it! Was the program meant for PPC?
-
There are so many of them. Here a few:
http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/diskimage_device
http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/fms_20
http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/xfs
Bye,
Thomas

None of those will actually convert your floppies to disk images for you, though. Re: Aladdin 4D, I'm sure DiscreetFX can/will help you out. Bill's on here frequently.

Seeing as it was for Amithlon, why would you ask me if it was a program meant for PPC? :inquisitive:

I didn't say they would convert your floppies. You mount them, like virtual disk drives. I think it was FMS or something like that. Gave you up to 8 virtual floppies. Quite cool.
-
You can mount the adfs on the virtual fms and then if you really want to convert them to dms ar whatver
-
If you want to use disks, you need a Catweasel Mk4 PCI, such as eBay lot #120370459900. That'll provide you with access to Amiga floppies.
I think diskimage.device is best to mount images of ADFs. Look on OS4Depot.net for the diskimage device.
-
Does that have os4.1 drivers and work on the sam ?
-
I think the Catweasel is 3.3V compliant and I know there's OS4 drivers for the Catweasel on OS4Depot...
.. but I've not tried them. Should be ok though!

I`m confused by that statement.

We would be glad to help you. When/where did you buy Aladdin4D? It should have came with an install CD. If it did not please send your registration number to the following link so we can get you an install CD.

@ Methuselas
I really haven't kept track of the Amithlon, don't know much about it so my statement was based on ignorance...
-
@ Thomas
Thanks for the input, I do have 2 A500's and one A4000 so I should be able to convert the floppies to adf's using transdisk as supplied with UAE

@ spirantho
Thanks for the input on the catweasel, do you know of a PDF of a user manual for this device? I haven't seen much info on how exactly this might be hooked up, example: can I use any type of floppy drive with it like Amiga or PC floppy drives?

@ Pyromania
I believe I received the Aladdin 4D with a Toaster card I ordered from you!
It is always a positive experience working with DiscreetFX!
Thanks for being there for the Amiga community!
-
@ All others...
Thanks much for all your responses! I believe there is more support available (for the Amiga) now than was available back in 1988 when I bought my first A500... Very encouraging!!

Okay, first off, I hate it when people call themselves ignorant. Really works my tits. Then again, I probably could have explained things a bit more clear. We're equally to blame on that one. My apologies, if I in any way, offended you. That was never my intentions.
Amithlon was basically a tight, linux kernel with limited driver support for specific hardware and an embedded UAE core that ran on X86. It ran only 68k apps. Those will still run, sandboxed in OS4. Amithlon never ran PPC apps. Although, Duke Nukem and Quake screamed on Amithlon. I never got a chance to benchmark Quake 2.
Pyro, however, is sending you an opportunity to get a CD version. I'd jump on that first.
Cheers!

Go to the Individual Computers website and send a message to Jens. He's totally awesome and if he has one, which I'm sure he does, he'd be more than happy to email one to you, to read up on it. I used to have a Catweasel/Buddha MK2 in my old A3000. A trick piece of hardware. Always wanted to get the PCI version for Win-UAE.
-
I've got four Catweasels (one ISA, one Mk3, and two Mk4), and they all work well with standard 3.5" and 5.25" HD floppy drives. Standard is the key. Teac and Sony work well. Avoid mysterious, unmarked generic drives.
The ISA and Mk3 are known to work under Amithlon (at least, I think I remember the ISA card working under Amithlon). The Mk3 and Mk4 work with current versions of WinUAE under Windows. (The ISA might still work with WinUAE as well, but I'm not sure if Toni still has the legacy Catweasel code compiled in.) The Mk3 and Mk4 should also work on any Amiga system that supports m68k OS3 device drivers and OpenPCI.
If you happen to have a working ISA bus on an Amiga, the ISA card might work there, too. I don't know if that's ever actually been tested with the last release of multidisk.device.

@beamer
Understood, the shipping department should have sent you a Aladdin 4D CD-ROM with the package. Sounds like this did not happen. Please send a request with your address for the CD via the link below and shipping will get a CD out to you for free.

@ Methuselas
No apologies needed!
One definition of "ignorant" per merriam-webster.com "lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified"
Thanks for educating me on the Amithlon... good to know.
Looks like I might have a catweasel in my future, will have to write to Jens, Thanks!

@ Pyromania
Thanks very much! I have already done as you said, you have been a great help to me!!

Hi there,
I too only received a copy of Aladdin 4D v5 on Floppy, which of course is of no use with my Sam440.
Please would it be possible for you to supply the CD version so that I can install it?
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.
