I received a model 1010 Amiga floppy drive today. Hooked it up and it works just fine. Previously I had a 1011 Amiga drive, which also works fine. BUT, if I link the 1011 to the 1010, only the 1010 drive is seen when the Amiga (500) is turned on. If I plug each drive in seperately and power on, each works. So, what could be the problem? Is there some sort of compatibility problem I am not aware of with linking the 1011 drive to the 1010?

I've linked both in the past successfully, but with a beefy supply. I bet you are experiencing power drain since you probably have other peripherals hooked into the A500. Ram expansion, accelerator, etc. BTW: the stock power supply on the A1200 and A500... we were all warned back in the day to not be adding more than 1 external Commodore drive and probably why the drives and/or Amiga have built in protection against overload. Most of the 3rd party companies released much more power efficient drives...

That makes sense. I had the 1011 and a Mejing drive hooked together previously and that worked, so the Mejing must have a lower power draw. I unplugged my accelerator and ram just to see if it work work, but no dice. I ordered a 250W power supply for the A500 now. It is something I have been wanting to do for awhile, and now it is actually necessary :)

Hi,
I also made the test to chain a A1010 and a A1011 Commodore drive on my A1200 and I have the same result as you :
- A1010 is working well on the external connector when it is alone,
- A1011 is working well on the external connector when it is alone,
- when the A1011 is linked to the A1010, A1010 is working but A1011 is not working.
Indeed, it seems that when linked, the A1011 is not powered through the A1010 (I cannot hear the typical "clic" inside).
I have a A1200 with a 200MB 2.5" hard drive + a GVP A1230 Turbo accelerator card which probably need a big amount of power. My power supply is the standard A1200 power supply. As you said maybe this power supply is not enough powerfull to power the second floppy drive.
I will try to get the powerfull A500 power supply in the future and see if the problem is solved with this change.
Maybe even if the power supply is more powerfull, it will not solve the problem if the problem is linked to the fact that the external floppy connector is limited to a certain amount of power which is under the need of a A1010 + A1011 floppy drives.
I also heard several times that 1 external floppy drive is only supported (even it is said 2 or 4 in some documentations) but I do not manage to find the truth on the net.

Funny, I just (30 minutes ago) read this for something in another thread.
One exception to this is the A1010 because its pass-through port is not powered.

OK ! The explanation is very clear now ! So the pass-through port on the A1010 can only be used for self-powered floppy drive (not the A1011 for example).
Thanks !

Save2600 has done it before though, so what's the trick?

This is incorrect!!
There's no such thing as a "self-powered" A1011 or A1010.
When I had my A1200 and two drives, I had an A500 power supply hooked to it. When I had my last A500 and used 2 external drives, I had a PeeCee power supply.
Currently, my A1000 with its regular power supply powers 2 external drives, an ICD AdSpeed chip AND an external 2MB RAM board.
You're supposed to be allowed to hook up to three external drives to an Amiga computer. All the big box Miggy's can handle 'em anyway. You guys with wedged-desktop computers need heavier duty power supplies is all.
-
OK thanks ! so that's possible ! Good !
So I will try now to get a 35.7W A500 power supply to power my linked A1010 + A1011 :)
PS : For information, Commodore (and others) has also sold some self-powered floppy devices such as the A1020 which is supported on Amiga (see here : http://www.commodore-amiga-retro.com/amiga/a_amiga_inframe.htm)

Funny as I just recently hooked up these two drives to my A2000! They work fine. I have two internal drives and the 1010 and 1011 daisy chained. Maybe the P/S on the A500/1200 does not power both drives properly?

The Amiga 2000 has a 200watt power supply, it shouldn't have any trouble. Amiga 500 was 30watt.

Not a "stand in the sticker power" issue. If the voltage don't drop to a point where the last working device is found, no problems at all.
That's why I hack my own mini-ATX board inside the original (weak) power brick. Of course, look for a good quality (better if an excellent quality) ATX PSU to do the hack.:D

Really? LOL I was just trying to prove the two do play well together...

Hi gang,
Good news : I just won today a A500+ power supply (P/N = 312503-03) on Ebay for only 10 Euros which should enable me to get ~35 W of power instead of ~22 W for my A1200 and its 2 disc drives (see : http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/amiga_hacks/Amiga_Power_supplies/body_amiga_power_supplies.html#Dealing_with_power_supply_issues).
Hope it should solve my linking problem.
Let me 1 or 2 weeks (time to pay, to receive it and find some times to play with the Amiga) and I will give you my feedback.
Have a nice week-end.

When I was running an Amiga User Group to Copy Disks I Uased an A1000 with 4 A1010's connected so I could quickly diplicate Fish Disks for the members. The A1010's definately allowed powered pass through.

Hi gang,
I just received yesterday my new (old) A500+ power supply (P/N = 312503-03 / specs : 400ma - 5V 4.5A / 12V 1A / 12 100mA) which should enable me to get ~35 W of power instead of ~22 W for my A1200 and its 2 disc drives (see : http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/am..._supply_issues (http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/amiga_hacks/Amiga_Power_supplies/body_amiga_power_supplies.html#Dealing_with_power_supply_issues)).
However, it does not solve the problem : the A1011 is still not recognized behind the A1010 even with this bigger power supply. The A1011 is still not powered.
So assuming the A1010 is power pass-through, I think it seems to be a limitation of the A1200 which can not handle more than two disc drives (1 internal + 1 external) since many of you confirmed that it works on A500/A500+/A600/A1000 configurations.

Hello,
Since my last post, I got the original Commodore A1010 drive documentation and it clearly says that the Amiga A1010 pass-through port is not powered.
