Title: Software ROM compatability
Post by: blanning on March 13, 2009, 07:04:01 PM
Do newer roms tend to break compatibility with older software?  For example, would older games written when the 500 was new and had 1.3 roms run just fine on a later ecs machine with 3.1 roms? or do things tend to break?

Yes, some older games may not work on newer hardware/ROMs...   Some work fine...

People work around this by using software rom loaders, WHDLOAD (best option in most cases), etc.

I would say newer hardware breaks more software than newer ROMs. Sometimes it's a combination of both. A lot of early software was poorly written and broke from 1.3 to 2.0. Most 2.04+ software works with the latest ROMs though (3.1 or 3.9). I recommend almost everyone to upgrade to 3.1 ROMs.
