I'm about to install a 2gb CF card with one of those ide adapters into my a600. The plan is to upgrade the machine to 3.1 roms, then put the CF card into a USB CF card reader on my XP box, then use WinUAE to format and install 3.1 on the drive. Is there anything I should watch out for? Any tricks that would be useful to know up front? thanks.

hmmm, i'm not sure how the card reader interfaces the CF card to the PC.
just to be sure, (i did pretty much exactly what you're planning to do) i had the CF card in an IDE adapter, attached to an IDE to USB adapter to connect to the PC, so it definately shows up as a hard disk type device...
you'll probably be fine, but thats just what i did and it worked out ok for my A600 :-)

why don't you just install it direct on the amiga with hdtoolbox?

I don't have 3.1 floppies. And it would be a bigger pain to make them than to just stick the CF card into my xp machine.

You should consider installing classicwb for 68k on it.

I arranged my current setup on a CF card using WinUAE on the PC with a USB card reader. I had some problems with setting things at first, but I don't remember them exctly... Just remember that you have to press ENTER after you've filled in a value in HDToolbox to actually make the change :P. Check out eab.abime.net, I think they have some decent tutorials and tips on this stuff.
And now I have a WinUAE setup so I can use the "same" install in WinUAE and install all the programs I need quickly from windows folders. Transferring all the stuff from a PC to the Amiga can be pretty boring before you've set up some decent means of communication.

This is a good plan, that is how I installed OS 3.9 on my CF (my Amiga 1200 has no CDROM drive).
It should work without issues, if you do have trouble try a slow format of the CF using the XP machine.

Thanks to everyone. I was hoping to get my rom in the mail today, but no luck. Now I'm hoping to get it tomorrow so I have the weekend.
