Title: Amiga 600 Keyboard issues...
Post by: icbrkr on March 05, 2009, 04:44:33 PM
I seemed to have hosed up my 600's keyboard by constantly opening up my 600 and disconnecting it.  The ribbon cable didn't make a connection well so I thought maybe I had worn it out a bit and after some fiddling, it doesn't work at all.  I put in a different keyboard in the connector slot so I know that's good... now.. is it possible to fix this keyboard or do I need a new one/new matrix with ribbon cable?

Hi.

Think one of these will fix your problem.

Cleaning the end of the ribbon with an alcoholic wipe can often restore them...failing that, carefuly trim 1-2mm off the ribbon end so it makes better contact.

Tried the trim trick but now it doesn't work at all :/ ... I sent Airey an email this morning.  Usually he sends to the US but he didn't state it on this auction.

So... who wants to buy this and ship it to me and I'll reimburse?

Airey said, oh yeah, he'll ship to the US .. I know he does since I buy from him all the time.  But his auction isn't listed to send to the US, so it won't let me.  I replied and said "I'll buy it right now, but your auction won't allow me to checkout since the US isn't listed as a destination" and I haven't gotten an answer.

I've done the "trim the ribbon cable" trick to move a fresh section of ribbon into the connector.  Worked for me.

I´ve done the "trim the ribbon cable" in a state of desperation
long ago on my A1200 keyboard, though I'd *never* recommend it.
The cable is layered with green transparent plastic tape on top.

The trick was to peel back this layer exposing the contacts beneath.

My cable ended up getting shorter and shorter.
Worked as a temp. solution untill I ordered a new keyboard.

I'm going to have to recheck it then.  I trimmed just a bit, pulled back the plastic and the contacts appear to be showing correctly but no keys are currently working.

@ icbrkr

Are you near Eureka Springs?  We always visit E.S. when in the area.

This is a dumb question.  You do lift the plastic compression thingy on the motherboard connector before pulling and re-inserting the ribbon, right?

I'm about 45 mins away, so I'd consider that close ;)

Yeah, in most cases I pulled up the connector though I'm sure that there were times the top of the case just sorta fell over and pulled it out.

I have a friend over in the UK buying it for me and is shipping it this direction.
