can I live any longer with out a USB port in my Vanilla Wedge

A vanilla A1200? USB board (Subway) don't work without an accelerator with at least a 030 running at 33MHz (dog slow).

To even add a SUBWAY (http://www.e3b.de/usb/main_subway_e.html) card on the A1200 clock port, the requirements states that the minimum CPU is a 68030 of at least 25 MHz. Looks like you'll need an accelerator of some sort.

You can use USB Mice, keyboards, hubs, printers and some other devices on as little as a 7Mhz 68000 with 512Kb RAM using the ANAIIS USB stack. Sure, it's not as fully featured as Poseidon, but it would get you through until you can afford to add an accelerator. ANAIIS works very well with my A1200 Subway.

What would you need USB for on a plain 1200?

Not quite correct. It will work with any CPU >=68020, but it will be dead slow. Moreover, I doubt that 2 MB is enough RAM for everything, so an accelerator with more RAM is sensible.

what you got against dogs dog slow

Why can't someone just program a UART to work with USB? If you have a fast enough communications chip, you shouldn't need an accelerator.
