The only cf adapter that I know, is the EasyADF PCMCIA from amigakit. This one only works on A1200 & A600.

I've seen other brands at local computer stores. I think any of them should work, as long as they have a standard mini-IDE connector (or 40 pin IDE connector and you use an adapter). The circuit board should do all the magic, and the Amiga should only see it as an IDE drive.

If you want peace of mind and something that will 'just work' then go Amigakit - you'll get good service and support.

If you don't mind taking a risk and a little wait go get something off eBay from China for a £1. I think most CF to IDE will be fine, the CF to PCMCIA are the ones that seem to cause the most trouble...

OP said IDE not PCMCIA...

Any cheap adapter from eBay will work. For example:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350165148739

There's nothing clever about these devices. There is no logic - they just physically convert the CF card to fit on to the IDE connector. It's really just a cable. So there's really no need to invest in an expensive "Amiga-specific" version.

As I was saying... don't worry about IDE to CF. PCMCIA to CF are the ones what you want to worry about and take a bit of time selecting.

Mainly the CF itself can be the problem !
BEWARE : Some models can't be use as "IDE" HDD on amiga.
Search on this forum.

thanks for all the input guys, i had a hunch that there was no real science behind the "a1200/600 cf ide" kits available on ebay and the likes for around £25.
You have saved me a few pounds, and i thank you for that. anyway, what was i seriously going to do with 4gb of space on my 1200? i can install all my games probably and use a quarter of that at most!

Thanks again, silent running amiga here i come - woohooo  :-D  :-D

Well, not all inexpensive adapters support DMA, so that's something to keep in mind if you plan on using it with a DMA SCSI controller (and something like an Acard). Personally, I pay a little more and buy from Mesa or Addonics, I've seen some nasty construction on the cheap ones (like sloppy solder bridging pins). But in 98.7% of cases the cheap one will probably be fine. :p

I just tried searching on here, and I can't find anything about CF cards that can be used as HD's.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

i couldnt find the article on which cf cards are good as hard drives either, but im going to assume that a sandisc ultra 2, as long as the adapter supports cf2 is going to be good surely?
2gb hd for around £10, cant complain ;)

Yep, the ultra 2 should be fine. I have one too and I don't have any probs with it. As long as you don't format it as NTFS.

Not true if you ask me. CF cards are IDE devices. All IDE->CF adapters are passive and just wire from one connector shape to another.

All adapters are compatible with the Amiga because they are passive, i.e. just a bunch of wires !

The incompatibilities that exist are to do with the CF cards themselves. They must be a FIXED type rather than a REMOVABLE type. Some SANDISK cards can be changed using software if you get the wrong one.

IDE->SD adapters are more expensive and can be slower than IDE->CF but so far, all converters tested have worked with the Amiga regardless of card make.

Take a look here! (http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.ide%20-%20cf)

I have this (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10309) and this (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1698). they both work nicely with my A1200. the cf adapter was tested with a 512mb cf card.
The SD adapter was tested successfully with a 512mb and a 1gb MMC card. They should do the same with SD cards as well.
HOWEVER!
They do not like to share the IDE bus with any other device (i do not know if buffered ide controllers works (like the 4xIDE devices), since i have none of those. My a1200 runs primary on SCSI.
But hey.. for a couple of dollars and free shipping...

EDIT: a link is corrected

Well, my integral cf card and the previous one, this already has been replaced for this problem, isn't working with the cf device. My other cf card which is a ultra 2 worked straigt out of the box.
