hi peeps. purchased a 120mb seagate hd off ebay supposedly with workbench and other goodies installed. ive connected it to the a1200 and now it should boot to workbench correct?
well it doesnt and if i load workbench from disk i cant see any HD0 there at all. is the drive dead? it spins up and light comes on but thats it.

Try booting from a Workbench floppy and using HDToolBox, in the Tools drawer, to see if the drive shows up.
-
when i go into hdtoolbox i get status "unknown"
-
It's pretty easy to misalign the IDE headers on a 2.5" HD. Are you positive it's hooked correctly? Also, the Workbench disk you're using... does HDToolbox know to look for scsi.device? OR did someone overwrite that with a different spec?
-
its hooked correctly
-
dont understand what you mean about hdtoolbox
-
could it be the 1200 at fault?
-
Anything's possible with old computers. A component may have failed or someone fried the bus by hooking it incorrectly.
HDToolbox... highlight the icon. Select 'Info' and in the tooltypes section... see what is labeled as the .device. It should read: "scsi.device", even though it's an IDE drive & bus. lol
-
yeah its labeled scsi.device, should i maybe try it on my 600hd?
-
when i load hdtoolbox, i have an scsi interface with the hard drive status as unknown. when i go to "change drive type" mine is not listed there. when i ask it to define a new one by reading the drive it gives me garbled info, wrong size of drive etc.
-
Only other thing I can think of is maybe it was formatted using a different file system than the native Amigas - FFS? Not sure what else is going on. In any case, a drive that small should be recognised by OS 3.1, an icon (at least) should pop up with DH0:????? and you should be able to format it after you've saved the info (garbled or not) for the drive type.

hey, tied everything other than throwing it onto the laptop to see if would work on that. i tried it in the 600hd to no avail, but i tried the 20mb hd from the 600 in the 1200 and it boots no problem. im assuming the drive faulty and returning it to the guy for a refund, it was sold as being full of progs and games anyway so if it had to be re-formatted it would have been a waste of money (paid slightly more). cheers for the help anyway
