Title: OS3.9 Installation without CD-ROM possible?
Post by: selco on September 09, 2003, 10:41:02 AM
Hi all, I have a problem ;)

My son (The boy with the light saber) wants OS3.9 for his A1200 and asks me everday about it. He is just 6 years now but has no other topic to talk about since several weeks. That start to become annoying, so its highest time to do what I promised...

There is however one problem. There is no CD-ROM in his C=A1200. The A1200 is connected to my big C=A4000T via ethernet and envoy3, so he has access to my CDROM-drive via the net.

How can I install 3.9 on his machine? I could copy the CD via the net onto his hardrive, but how will I do the real installation then? Is that possible from the harddisk-copy?

Any tips? Any expiriences?

Thanks in advance, selco

That's what I would attempt to do.
Installing from hard disk is faster than from cd anyway.
I don't have 3.9, but I would say that you copy the CD to its own directory, and make an assign to that directory that is the same name as the CD.

Just make sure you have the HDD space!

Just remeber to do an assign to where the Install files are lying...

Otherwise the OS3.9 installer will ask you...

Sorry, I overlooked imaboringperson's very same advice... :-)

You could copy the entire CD into a directory, assign AmigaOS3.9: to that directory and do the installation from the directory.

But if you already think about copying, there is a simpler method of installing: copy only the contents of the Emergency-Boot directory from the CD to your boot drive, then replace the S/startup-sequence by that from the OS-Version3.9 install directory (somewhere in there). Ready.

Of course this way you miss everything special for your setup, e.g. processor libraries, graphics card drivers and CD-ROM drivers.

Bye,
Thomas

I installed OS3.5 in the way described by iamaboringperson et al (via a friend's PC) and it worked perfectly.

I don't imagine that there would be any difference doing the same with OS3.9.

I don't think it's possible. The installation process needs the CD inserted because it is the copy protection.

Install OS3.9 somewhere in your hard disk (you
may have to modify the installation script so that it doesn't bother you because you already have OS3.9) . Then copy the files over the network...

I did it when I installed the OS4 demo machine for the OS4 tour...

@selco

OS3.9 on a plain A1200? How much fast mem do you have? (6 MB at least).

Ciao

-edit- However . . a very cool boy :-)

Its not a plain 1200, it has a GVP 68030/40MHz with 16MByte of Fast Ram.

I just worried about a possible "CD-Present-Copy-Protection"

when i received my CD writer, i've done a copy of OS3.9 CD on a CDRW disc (testing pourpose) and the copy was right.

Now i don't know if during an installation from the copied OS39CD disc, could give problems.

Ciao

There is no copy protection. Just copy the files from the CD and it will work.

Thomas

Ok, nice to hear. Just one more question: How much space is needed for the boot partition of OS3.9 including a little space for future installations?

Currently for his 3.1 installation its 8MByte IIRC. How much would you suggest? (The entire HD is quite small so I don't want  to make "boot:"  to big .

Perhaps 20 MB for 3.9 (I could fit mine in 10MB RAD when I tested) + then some for other stuff.

Why can't you just share the CD with envoy?

There's no copy protection for installing 3.9, but there is one for the BoingBags (#1 on os.amiga.com and #2 on h&p's website). You'll need the CD in a drive to install those. It's possible that an assign also could work. I think it works in UAE, at least.
