I have my old lappy hard drive I stuck in my 1200.
It detects it, formats it and works fine.
However; It is 10 gig, and due to the 4 gig limit, will it work to simply partition 3 3-gig partitions? When I try this it appears to work, but when I am installing OS3.1 when it gets to the fonts, it says there is not enough room to install the fonts. So maybe I am missing something.
Thanks,
-
Why don't you update scsi.device (or install NSD?) and FFS to use TD64? Of you do that you can then configue th drive as say 4gig for your system partition and 6gig for work.
On my A400D I've got a 80 gig drive and I'm using NSD and smartfilesystem without any issues (so far!).
-
i use a 10gig in mine, it is partitioned with 3 partitions....2 just under 4 gig and 1 2 gig partition...works fine for me.

Yes, but it is dangerous. You cannot use more than the first 4GB of the drive. If you fill up the second or third partition, one day your first partition will loose all its data because it is overwritten by the other partitions.
You should create a 900 MB boot partition and two 1500 MB data partitions for now and leave the rest empty, then your data is safe.
when I am installing OS3.1 when it gets to the fonts, it says there is not enough room to install the fonts
That's not related to the above. This message appears because there is more than 2 GB free. These high numbers appear to be negative for the installer. Make smaller partitions, then this will not happen. Or fill the partition until less than 2 GB remains.
(or install NSD?)
NSD does not help for >4GB. Actually it does not do anything useful.

I am sure there is something else in addition which you use, because even with NSD it is not possible to access more than the first 7.8 GB of the drive.
NSD just translates TD64 commands into HD_SCSICMD, but the hardware access is still done by the original driver and this original driver can only see 7.8 GB.

As far as I know, the first (boot) partition, can maximum be 2GB.
~200MB is more than enough for WB3.1 + extras :-)
But.. I'm sure someone else knows more about this than I do!
-
I use mine in conjuction with idefix97...which patches the filesystem...hence no problems.
-
Thomas,
You're quite right I'm also running IDEFix97, which I should have stated. It all works fine.
-
Ok sounds good... IDEFix97....
How does this chronologically work?
Lets say for example, I just put in the 10gig drive.
Do I first boot off the 3.1 install disk then format with idefix97?
How does it work?
Thanks!
Joe

the way i did it was to partition the drive how i wanted it....fresh install of WB then install idefix97, i've never had any problems.
-
So you don't need NSD and TD64 if you use IDEfix97?
-
No - you still need NSD or TD64 to use HD's larger than 4GB. If that is not a true statement, I shall be dipped! IDEFix "fixes" many things - mostly CD-ROM or multiple HD's connected at once, but does not strictly deal with the use of larger HD's.
-
i forgot to add...my wb install disk contains the latest FFS in the L drawer :-)

Well...
NSD and TD64 are command sets. They cannot be installed seperately. There is an NSDPatch program. But as mentioned above, it is not needed in any case whatsoever.
IDEfix already supports both command sets and large hard drives. So you don't need to install anything else on the hardware driver side.
But to use NSD or TD64 you also need a file system which supports these commands.
There is an FFSTD64 patch on Aminet which makes the standard FastFileSystem use TD64 commands.
And there is SFS (SmartFileSystem) of course.
PFS (ProfessionalFileSystem) is another solution, but it is commercial an only available second-hand.

What do you mean by "latest" ? The very latest version of FFS is 51.10 and is only available with OS 4.0 Classic. The latest version which comes with OS 3.1 is 40.1 and is not able to cope with large hard drives. You need either version 43 (Commodore beta), version 44 (result of FFSTD64) or version 45 (OS 3.5 or 3.9).
And it does not matter what is stored in your L drawer. Nothing from there is used. To install a file system you have to use the Add/Update menu in HDToolbox.

Can drives larger than 4 gig be used with the gvpscsi.device? I have a GVP 040 card in my A2000, and a 50 gig SCSI drive that I would like to use with it.
I ordered OS 3.9 several weeks ago, but who knows how long it will take for it to arrive... :madashell:

Has anyone installed an Elbox 4xEIDE'99 adapter? I picked up one last week and have been having a hard time to get any partition above 8GB. (does OS3.5 scsi.device/hdtoolbox allows up to 8.something GB?
I have a 20GB hard drive installed, before I used only the first 8GB or so in 4 partitions. I think I had an IDEfix patch installed. I am ok going back to that, but... the first part of the instructions with the 4xEIDE was to remove IDEfix or other scsi.device patches. I decided I would start my WB install from scratch. Loaded WB 3.0 from disk. Made a 200MB partition to install on. Installed 4xEIDE software and got CD-Rom drive up and running. I then installed WB3.1 and then proceeded to install 3.5. Installation went perfect, but once I shut down the machine (hard reboot) the CD drive was not present. Figuring OS3.5 altered the mount list I reinstalled the 4xIDE driver/software. CD is back. I am still stuck with max of 8GB or so in HDToolbox.
The instructions for the 4xEIDE say you can "split" the drive into logical drives of "under" 4GB, translated 3.9GB. Using the 4xEIDE.driver and 4xEIDE.prefs, I have been able to get the drive in split mode, but recieve a warning:
You have changed driver mode for one or more HDDs (Split/no-split) into incompliant with the disk installation or partitioning. The driver mode must always comply with the way the disk was installed. The only exception is when you want to install or partition the disk in a different way(split/no-split)
I have gotten HDToolbox to show the logical drives and have even installed and setup the partitions. After the required reboot, they are not present and the 4xIDE.prefs lists the driver in "No-Split" mode. I even tried reinstalling the OS again after making these changes and figured that once the driver was reinstalled it would show up again.
At this point, I'm not sure what to do to get the "extra" space on my HD. I may just live with the 8GB as it is more then enough space; however, if someone knows the trick to this, I would like to utilize the extra space.
Will welcome any input, and Thanks!

If you really want to switch from non-split to split mode you have to reinstall the *first* 4GB part before you reboot. You cannot keep the 8GB installation if you want to enable split mode.
If you want to keep non-split mode, you can try fixhddsize (http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/fixhddsize) to make the rest of the drive available for partitions. But be aware that the upper 12 GB are only accessible when the eide driver is running.
The driver built into Kickstart can only see 8 GB (7.8 GiB).

@Thomas....
By saying the latest i meant from OS3.9.
And overwriting the the Fastfilesystem from L: on your 3.1 install disk, surely thats the version your HD is installed with?

Yes, that's true. If you boot from the Install diak and install a HDD for the first time, FFS is loaded from the L drawer on the disk.

Thanks Thomas, thought my efforts were in vain then
