Title: Amiga Vs PC Games YouTube
Post by: Managarm on February 06, 2009, 08:32:18 PM
I just discovered this video on YouTube, I hope it's not something you've all seen a hundred times before.

The maddest one is the comparison between the two versions of Barbarian. Hope you all enjoy...

This is what I think: when 256 colors and SoundBlaster becomes a standard I thought that the mainly PC's adventure and strategy games becames better graphicaly than AMiga Games. Compare the PC's King QUest 5 or 6 with the Amiga version in a monitor. But I like the Amiga Games mainly because I remember the old days when I begin to use the first home computers. I had ZX-81(here in Brazil was CP-200), Zx Spectrum , MSX  so the Amiga was naturally the progression of this line of computers. PC was in the beggining more business oriented (Lotus 1-2-3, Word etc). Action games which is the kind of games that I like only becames accessible in PC hardware when the graphics accelerators becames more accesible (the first popular graphics cards here in Brazil had a cost of 500 dollars or more).

I've been reading articles about Microsoft shutting down their ACES studio and that Flight Simulator has possibly come to an end.

Although the new version blows away the Amiga version from SubLogic, I have very fond memories of flying with my Amiga 500 and Flight Simulator II.  I can't remember if I flew more with the Amiga or my parents' Commodore 64, lol.

Have you played the flight simulator on the iPhone?  It blows away all the others in playability...

It's a very good comparison, though.
At the time I had a PC (or, well, used the pc of my parents)
which was a whopping 386 with VGA, but games back then rarely took advantage of that hardware. One was lucky if EGA was supported
And sound cards were out of the question before 1994.

I am really impressed with the iPhone.  I made a few apps and it's just too easy to do.  The iPhone provides a standard base, you know what is there and can use it,  It the Amiga ever entered the 21st Century it would be an iPhone...

Maybe, but it has nothing to do with this thread.

How about comparing iPhone and Amiga games?

>How about comparing iPhone and Amiga games?

You can better compare iPhone with PC games as both don't have good control on their games (digital joysticks) and both nowadays force you to go through API calls instead of directly to the hardware.

Xbox 360 controller includes two analogue control sticks and two analogue pressure buttons. While playing console ported games(e.g. GRID Race Driver, Fallout 3 and 'etc'), I use Xbox 360 controller with my laptop PC.

To access the hardware, one can create a driver.

For as far as I understand it, it's about the comparison of vintage games on pc versus Amiga
so no Iphone involved :-)

Never had a Xbox.  I thought analog directions were bad enough to program and use; now you have analog buttons as well.  I can just imagine Space Invaders for XBox stating a message: "Sorry you got killed.  Your shot only fired 30%-- not enough acceleration to shoot down your enemy."

If the hardware you are programming exists underneath and the existing driver lets you.  Older PCs had basically same standard hardware I/O ports so I find some of the older VGA/Sound-Blaster DOS games are still quite good when compared to modern games based on DirectX 16.44 (or whatever version they are up to) which probably only a few ATI cards support.

Some of those XBox games designed to take advantage of analogue buttons work really well. Driving games come to mind. In the case of a Space Invaders type game, you either have to press the spongy analogue button all they way in or the game might be programmed well enough to accept a full detent with any old value. Pinball games on the GameCube were particularly annoying using their spongy UL & UR buttons as flippers. Had to press them in so far until they 'clicked' before the flipper would flip. And you can't always re-assign button configs. Weak.

here:

http://www.amigapage.it/index.php?pl=intro

many games (more intro than games, however), DOS vs Amiga
and many more.
AtariST, C64, MSX ecc.

now, i'm making a new set videos on DOS, but it's a great work.
i have problem, becasus i use dosbox and zmbv codec is not supported by program to create stream video onverstion..
so..
i think to the end, many GB of videos..

I guess I fail to see the point in comparing games that are so horribly out of date.  I mean this isn't 1989, it's 2009, what's the point?

Because it's fun and some of us like it :-)

And.. I think that I'm a bit out of date too ;-)

Games are games, and cannot be horribly out of date.
Thereby, old computers have this 'soul'; the soul of people who put effort in writing software for these machines, the effort in building these machines. I just love the scent of an old computer in home, kinda comparable with old books.
