Title: Anybody know where I can get a floppy drive aligned?
Post by: AmigaNow on February 06, 2009, 04:30:01 AM
Did not find any loose chips or cracks in my Amiga 1000 mobo, so I can only assume my floppy was knocked out of alignment after USPS threw my computer over my fence. :furious:   :madashell:  :pissed:

Was wondering if anyone repairs Amiga floppy drives anymore or do I need to watch ePay for a replacement?

If you're handy with tools (and have the patience), you could give this (http://aminet.net/package/driver/media/TrackDiskSync) a shot. A little tricky, but it works.

Requires:   Kickstart 2.04 or better. One working floppy drive. A joystick.

Can an Amiga 1000 load Kickstart 2.04?

How bad does the floppy seem? Does it just give read errors?
This may sound a bit odd but this is something I found that used to work on my A500. I loaded DiskSalv from an external drive put any old disk in DF0: and got DiskSalv to salvage the disk.  I think because DiskSalv directly controls the head (or something, I'm guessing) it moves it to the correct position.  Or something like that, anyway it worked for me on a couple of occasions.  Of course this is completely useless if you haven't got an external drive or the condition of the drive is serious.

that sounds ridiculous but i've seen my mail man bend and crease an envelope (that clearly said not to bend on it ) and then cram it into my own mail box. his supervisor didn't care and told me that if it wasn't insured then there was nothing i could do. oh yeah, there was a CD-ROM in that envelope. he cracked the CD, just to cram the envelope into my box instead of just leaving a note for me to pick it up at the post office because it was too big. so, i am inclined to believe that the usps would just throw a box over a fence.  :madashell:

Just recently got an Amiga500 off ePay.  :-D  Was wondering since it's internal floppy works if it would be compatable with my Amiga1000? If so I could just swap drives and then I could play games in color. My video out (composite) is quite clean on my Amiga1000...

If not, could an Amiga1000 boot WB off an external floppy?

Thanks,

I guess I'll be the bearer of bad news here... I am almost positive the A1000 does NOT have a jumper selection like the A2000 does that allows DF1: to boot. Also, the floppy drive in a 500 is much smaller and thinner than the 1000's. I do not believe they would be easily interchangeable. This and the buttons are different. Wider and thinner on the A500. You might have better luck simply tracking down an external 1010 floppy drive, remove its guts and swap out with the A1000...

Hi,
before any Alignement tricks be sure to :
- Have kicked out all the old grease
- Have sprayed electro contact cleaner in the motors
- Have putted oil in the 2 motors

Which kind of A1000 drive to you have ? Epson or Mitsumi (the one with the metalic rubbon for head displacement ) ?
Depending of what is inside or it was replaced and modified, it will be possible or impossible to swap the drive.

The drive is a Matsushita Model JU-363-03. I take it the metallic ribbon is inside the drive as I do not see if from the outside or bottom.

If you think it may be fixable, PM me with details. I'll like to get the old girl working again.  ;-)

otherwise is the following an option,

I recently got a 1010, but could not get my Amiga to boot to "Insert Kickstart". I noticed that the power connector was oriented backwards, as well as the data cable. Attempted installation but did not boot. Reinstalled the original drive and my Ami boots again to Kickstart. 1010 also still works.

I will attempt having my original drive looked at unless you know what I am doing wrong or if I need an adapter, etc for the 1010 to work inside the Amiga1000.

Thanks

So, you removed and plugged in the drive from the 1010 into DF0: and the A1000 would not boot? Sounds like you didn't get the cabling right. Did you try reversing the ribbon cable? Observe which end the (usually) red wire sits in both your A1000 and A1010's ribbon cable. There's also a middle notch on the drive's male connector for reference. It's been quite a while since I swapped a 1010 drive with an A1000, but the transfer should be seamless. No jumpers to set or adapters needed.

Amiga floppies are common and cheap enough that I'd probably just say buy a new one, unless you've got the skills to repair one yourself. Save the bad one for a future project or parts.

I highly doubt throwing it over the fence did this. Maybe something was caddywhampus to begin with.

Kittywampus is an alternate form of 'kattywampus'. I use this phrase all the time to describe people and conditions around me. It's slang for 'messed up'. And according to an urban dictionary: kittywampus is a crazy word from south-western Wisconsin meaning-off-balanced, un-centred, or a general state of confusion. Didn't know it was "from" south-western, WI - but that would be par for the course!  lol
