I have been successfully using a 512MB no name CF for a while, so I decided to get something bigger. Reading on forums I found out that 2gig and 4gig Transcend compact flash cards (x133) work great, so I decided to go for an 8gig. I mean, what could go wrong?
Short answer: everything :(
Long answer:
I tried to do various things, create partitions of various sizes (even smaller than 1 gig), and tried both FAT and FAT32 formats - absolutely no luck.
Sometimes when I remove the CF from the PCMCIA adapter, it gives me some error in German.
Anything else I could do before I chuck them into the bin*?
Thank you in advance!

Where you sticking it?
1) PCMCIA slot
2) Internal IDE
I had had problems with the PCMCIA slot until I removed my trapdoor expansion card.
-
That would be the PCMCIA then...
Sorry didn't read all your text (was on my iPhone).
-
I do have a 4meg expansion card in the trap door, but afaik its compatible with the PCMCIA port, hence, I have been using a 512MB card with the pcmcia adapter previously.
-
I had the exact same German error despite the CF not showing in Workbench. The card is being picked up but just not that extra bit.
Like I said before try removing anything in the trapdoor, think mine is a 1Gb Transcend card had that showed up once my fast RAM was removed.
-
Remove it. I'm in the same boat - 4Mb shouldn't knock out the PCMCIA slot but it was an issue for me.
I'll try and find the post on EAB which prompted me to try it.
-
Alright, I will remove the card and try again. Thanks for the heads up.

Scroll down and have a read... list of those that work with a trapdoor card and those that do not.
Had this all last month hence why it's still fresh in my head.
-
I removed the board as you suggested, no difference :(
It still doesnt come up in workbench, and when I remove the card... BANG - German error!
:-(
-
Grrr.
Open up Workbench >> Tools (I think) >> Format
The Format program should pop up and list all the drives there on yor machine; do you have a CF0: and CC0:?
-
can you please post the error you are getting?
-
Here you go:
DISK " "
Zu Fruh Entnommen!
wiederholen /aAbrechen
-
how do I translate this.. Disk is removed to soon? retry / abort
-
Plug it all together, switch it on and leave it for an hour - perhaps Workbench is just taking a while to address the size of the card.
-
Well,
what can PrepCard tell you ? ;-)
-
Sorry, where do I find prepcard?
-
It's in Workbench >> Systems >> PrepCard
If you run the program and right-click menu their is an advanced screen.
Mine would show the CF reader and card but wouldn't let me prep the card as system ram or storage - failed to write error or something.
-
Did you try the format program in tools? It should list you all the devices and if it can see a car in CF0: it shows the size of the volume in k - which hopefully means it can see the true volume.
-
Ok - I tried some stuff:
PREPCARD: This detects the CF (including its name!), but when I select FORMAT, it says something along the lines of "Disk is write protected".
FORMAT: Both CC0: and CF0: are listed but the sizes are weird, like 20k and 0k.
Side note: I have IDEFIX installed.
Any ideas what I could do to get my CF working?
Cheers

Everything is identical to me and my problems.
I resorted to buying a known good card from Amigakit, I think you're gong to have to settle knowing the card just isn't compatible.
-
:( This sucks. I wanted an 8gb card thats why I bought this one. Amigakit only sell 1gb cards.
So, my "last hope" is that I use it internally once I receive the IDE to CF adapter which is in the post.
-
How are you even going to fill that huge card with Amiga stuff?
-
With nearly 6 gigs of WHDLoad Games - the whole collection.
-
FORMAT: Both CC0: and CF0:
Ohhh !!! You MUST NOT have the CC0: icon !
Go in the DosDriver drawer and kick it away, it can cause you a conflict has both CC0 and CF0 try to get access at the same ressource
-
I dont ahve that icon... its just listed if I use the FORMAT: software.
-
So, check it (on a PC) if it's formated in FAT(FAT16b) or FAT32 or NTFS mode.
Do you use MSD or FAT95 on your amiga ?
-
what about card reset .
-
Ok here is an update....
I installed an updated version of compactflash.device (from aminet) and now the Amiga detects the card (Yesssss!!!!!)
Two remaining problems:
1. The card is not detected if I switch on the Amiga with the CF in the slot. If I do, I have to remove and re-insert.
2. I created a number of partitions (on the PC) on the CF, but the Amiga only sees the first partition.
Any ideas how to fix 1 and 2 :)
Thanks!

as stated in my last post you need a reset signal its missing on all A1200 motherboard, you have to add this in hardware but i think there also a software that can reset the PCMCIA port.

But with another CF (512MB), it works even if I boot the A1200 with the card inserted....

insert the card and turn your A1200 on you will not see the CF card.
if you pull the card out & then reinsert the card without a reset the amiga will then see the card regardless of what type of card is in the slot.
a hardware or software is required to fix the problem.

If I insert the 512MB and switch on the A1200, WB will "see it". But doing the same thing with the 8GB CF, it wont. BTW, I have Amigakit's software installed.
