I'm looking for an A4000 for basic use.
Do you guys think this is a good deal?
A4000 eBay (http://cgi.ebay.de/Amiga-4000-030-with-Blizzard-4030-50Mhz-TOP_W0QQitemZ260355724247QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_146?hash=item260355724247&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)

I'd say it is a bit pricey. I have seen those go around 300€
-

I bought one in better condition (not yellowed) with more extras for less than half that price (£150) last year (from eBay).
And it was a rare Rev D, A4000D-CR where this is a regular Rev B A4000D!
Don't pay too much.
-
Yes, a bit overpriced.
But nice condition :-)
Surely a CD-ROM drive/burner, cheap, would be the first upgrade for this Amiga :-)

What for?
Surely the first upgrade would be a back panel IDE->CF adapter (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350139007756) and a CF card?
Much easier to fit and use than an optical drive and facilitates fast transfer of files from a PC.
-
Overpriced or underpriced is in the eye of the beholder. Just do your homework and see what they have sold for and what add-ons you want your A4000 to have. Shipping cost kind of limits you to where you can buy from. Personnel sales in the 50 - 100 - 150 range really can't be compared to sales through an auction. If I buy one from my neighbor for 50 dollars, this means absolutely nothing to you or the value of an A4000 unless you have a neighbor with one for sale for 50 dollars. This sounds like a nice unit and at least it isn't stripped. One sold on EBay last night where the guy listed the computer seperate from the keyboard and mouse. Good luck!!!

Sorry, that's just what I would do, maybe it's because I have a pile of used IDE CD-rom drives :lol:
I think your suggestion about a back panel IDE->CF adapter are more usefull, IF you have a card reader for your PC and a CF card.
But considering the an upgrade to OS3.9 are what most people with big-box Amiga's want, I think a CD-rom drive will be necessary. I use cd's for my A4000 and CF for my A1200, I get the best of both things :-)
That's just what I would do, we all have different oppinions, luckily :-)
I just compared the price whit what I gave for my A4000/040 in 2006. But I have to agree that auktion prices mostly are higher. Amiga can very well be an expensive hobby :lol:

Why? You can install OS3.9 on your CF card using WinUAE before hand. Much easier than on a real Amiga.
dannyp1 wrote:

Not it isn't! It is pure maths. The price of the auction less the average price of similar auctions over a period of time. If it is negative it is under priced, if it is positive it is over priced.
€289 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270335969983)
€286 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180322939572)
€261 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300288648819)
€238 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120369088708)
€195 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170295143525)
€137 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110342297066)
eBay A4000D 030/040 Average = €235
So at €449 the item is €214 over priced!

That is a matter of taste ;-)
I always do it "on the real thing" if I can.
The only time I have used UAE for anything usefull, was a few days ago when I needed to transfer ClassicWB (http://classicwb.abime.net/) to my A1200 :-)
I have to agree with dannyp1, but if you think it's to expencive, don't but it. But I would buy this A4000 at the auction price, if I needed it.

Wow you masochist ;-)
When it comes to crap like installing (which I dont consider to be a part of the Amiga experience) I always like to do whatever is easiest and quickest. In the case of Amiga OS installation WinUAE is the best choice. An install of OS3.9 takes a fraction of the time it takes on a real Amiga. It's easy to also install all the boing-bags and various fixes, libraries etc. and also install all essential tools not on the OS3.9 CD.
Not only that you can pre-prepare an image in WinUAE, keep a copy on the PC and simply copy over to the CF card whenever you need to re-install.

Once the system is installed, it works. Luckily I don't need to re-install my Amiga's :-)
(At least not very often, mostly when I mess around with an Amiga I want to re-install and sell :roll: )
My A4000 has the same install of OS3.9 since I bought it in 2006, just a few added a few programs and games :-)
Really is just a matter of taste I guess.
Yes, that's also my oppinion :-)
-
Lorraine wrote:
Ah, but then there's some here, who, once they've done the install on the PC would just leave it there and use the PC as an Amiga (skipping the physical thing out all together). ;-)
If WinUAE felt closer to the real thing than it does I would. It's close but not close enough yet.
But we are going off topic. I've shown empirically that the A4000D in question is over priced.
-
eBay A4000D 030/040 Average = €235. So at €449 the item is €214 over priced!
But this one comes with a Blizzard 4030, kickrom 3.1 and a HD diskdrive. Also for me is the clock-battery very important. I have bought several A4000's in the past, to find out that they had all leaky batteries. The other auctions are very vague about the state of the battery or they have kickrom 3.0 or DD diskdrive's.
And only last week there was a similar A4000/030 sold for 450 euro's. So I'm very tempted to buy this one. It's in really good shape. :-)
-
The nice mb with no battery leak = BIG +++!
Hope you wins the auction :)

And some of the ones listed have A3640's, Buddha IDE controllers, Catweasel's and monitors.

A stock A4000D with a DD disk drive?? Not come across one yet.
Some have photos showing the battery removed and all is nice and clean. I'm sure you could have asked for photos of the others.
€449 is extortionate price for A4000D with only an 030.

I don't need buddha's or catweazels...like I said: It's only for basic use. And I have allready 3 monitors standing in the way.
Some have photos showing the battery removed and all is nice and clean.
Yes indeed...some of them. But the majority of A4000's have leaky batteries and yes, I've asked the sellers for some clear pics. Most of them didn't reply or didn't show a picture, so you know there's something wrong with the battery. At least, that's my experience in the past.
This guy shows clear pics, so you know what you buy.
-

Some sellers swap the HD diskdrive with a DD they pulled out of an old A2000/A3000 and put on another faceplate and eject button for use in the A4000.
I know, because I've bought one in the past and it also had a leaky batterie wich had caused major damage to the mainboard, resulting in a system that didn't recognized the clock anymore and freaky mouse movements.
I've learned to be very cautios if it comes to buying things on ebay. :rtfm:
-
But 2x average price? I don't think so.
-
None of my Amiga's has a HD diskdrive :-?
I have 2 A4000's, both of them has a normal DD 880kb drive.
1.76MB would maybe be nice in some cases, but it's okay with me with 880kb, then all of my miggy's can read the same disks :-)
-
THIS IS (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=320332533595) what I bought recently tough I haven't recieved it yet :( But I'm hoping the buyer will eventually come trough as others in this forum have recieved items from him. If I don't hear from him in next week I will file a complaint trough PayPal.
But seriously that A4000 is way over priced you should get atleast a 040 for that price + OS3.9.
-
But 2x average price? I don't think so.
I wouldn't call this A4000 "average", especially with the Blizzard 4030/50mhz, clean undamaged mobo with new battery, 3.1 roms, HD diskdrive and not yellowed.
"Average" A4000's on ebay are frequently with battery damage and/or are incomplete/modified and/or 3.0 roms and/or DD diskdrives and/or yellowed etc...
-
You are right about that :-)

AmiDude wrote:

Which Amiga are you looking at. The keyboard in the auction is as yellow as they come as is the floppy disk drive face plate and the mouse.
Lorraine wrote:
I'd prefer Blizzard 4030 to A3640, personally; that's even taking into consideration the speed difference.
I wonder why?

All things considered, I think you should just buy the one Alex has for 150 and forget about the more expensive one. The one Alex has is a much better deal (steal?). ;-)

@AmiDude:
LOL! I agree: buy Alexh's A4000! He's making a good point for it ;-)
Now be aware, Alexh is one of the most price sensitive blokes around here, so he'll definitely find this as a bit over the usual deal. And I will have to agree with his assessment on that. He also seems to have the patience of a boa and can hold off for that one "killer" deal, so that also helps in realizing the better prices! ;-)
@Alexh:
Let the guy buy what he wants! He doesn't want (or get) maths, he wants Amiga! I think he's pretty set on that :-)
@Painkiller:
Your "on the way" A4000's mobo has had a (battery or capacitor) leakage (visible in one of the photos) :-( It doesn't seem severe though and would be an easy cleanup.
-

Yeah I noticed that. Pretty sure it is the capasitor. It seems a bit damaged from the edges. Easy to fix as the damage doesn't look bad and I have replacement caps in storage :)
-
So you guys think it's a little bit overpriced?
Well, I'm sure that the current exchange rates
has something to do with that. The US$/BP are
very low compared with the EU€. In the US and
GB this A4000 is more expensive then in Europe.

Awe, I'm sensitive. At last someone realises ;-)

449 Euro or 585 US$.
Phase 5 Blizzard 4030 68030/50Mhz + MMU CPU board. ( Optional 68882/50Mhz FPU ).
* Kickstart ROMs 3.1 (v40.68). ( Neccesary for installing O.S. 3.5/3.9 ).
* 2MB Chip RAM - 16MB Fast RAM memory.
* Original Chinon FB-357A 1.76mb / 880k HD floppy disk drive
* New clock battery.
* yellowed mouse/keyboard.
my pricetag on it would have been : max US $400 or 308 Euro.
but getting a mobo that is fully functional is a plus (no battery ever spilled on it).

There are no goodies on at the moment but you'd be amazed how many "Amga accellerator" and "cybertsorm turboakrte" cards go cheap.

I trust you in that :-)
But it's amazing how much JUNK I found in one "Amiga" search :lol:

Great link! Thanks for sharing it Alexh!
But surely patience is one of your virtues. ( The other being, obviously, the obsession with Thalion GmbH, as of course it is for me as well :-) Ah.. the incredible hackery that lies within LionHeart... Just incredible!)
