Title: A3000 kickstart upgrade to a 6.1 board
Post by: dochubert on January 29, 2009, 06:42:39 PM
Hi,
I'm trying to get an Amiga 3000 desktop with an older version 6.1 motherboard to take 3.1 kickstart roms instead of the old "transfer roms" that are in it.
Background:
I already have a couple of 3000s with newer motherboards so somewhat familiar with them.  This one I just acquired, however, has that rev 6.1 board that has 4 rom sockets. The roms are in the "extra" two sockets and only load kickstart from the hard drive kickstart file in the Devs directory. It works fine this way (after motherboard repairs due to leaky battery - but that's another story!)
Anyway, all attempts to install either 3.1 or 2.04 roms in either set of sockets results in an amiga that does nothing but light the power led and run the fan. No video, no error messages, no blinks, no color screens, just nothing.
As I said, it works just fine in the original configuration so figure I'm just not doing something right.
Oh, and also tried changing jumpers 180 and 181.  No difference.
I've searched but found no info on upgrading roms in this board anywhere.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
dochubert

I seem to remember very dimly that these old 1.4 Kickstart boards require special ROMs...

You need a ROM Tower

This converts normal 27C400 EPROMs to the pinout supported by early A3000 motherboards.

But you know that you can get KS3.1 file which goes on the hard drive and works with KS1.4? If you are interested PM me and I'll explain how it all works.
