Title: Share files between MorphOS and OS 3.9?
Post by: novaburst on September 08, 2003, 01:47:51 AM
I am going to order a Pegasos II as soon as I can.
I am thinking about buying a classic Amiga as well. Probably an A1200 or A4000. The original versions, not the new tower models, hopefully.

My question is, will I be able to share files between my MorphOS machine and my classic Amiga?

Share files? You mean like over a LAN like Samba or FTP? Or do you mean run OS3.9 files on MorphOS?

I guess I was thinking more Samba. I have not seen 3.9 for a long time either, so I couldn't remember if that was possible.

So would Samba work well?
Or would FTP be a better route to go?

I guess I was wondering about a network card for the classic machine too.
What if it is an A1200, would the PCMCIA slot be the best place for a network card or is there another option?

Samba works perfectly between MOS on Pegasos and AmigaOS. I use it on a daily basis. No worries there. FTP is a little faster though and would be better for transferring huge files, but its nowhere near as versatile as samba.

And a PCMCIA network card is about the only way you'll get a network card for an A1200.  There are two other options - one is a zorro daughterboard and a zorro network card. You'd need to put your A1200 in a tower case for this. This is not recommended because zorro cards are very hard to find these days and haven't aged well.

Then there's a PCI daughterboard and a PCI network card. This is expensive but will give you the best performance. You'll need a tower case for this as well.

IMO, unless you're planning on spending a *lot* of money souping up the Amiga, the PCMCIA way is the best way. And since you're not going to tower up your Amiga, it's the only way.

Thanks so much for the response! Very helpful!

I don't plan on spending a lot on the classic machine. I am going to need that money to buy all the Pegasos stuff, hehe.

So I will probably go the PCMCIA route.

Other methods include a null modem, sneakernet using zip drives, but the pcmcia network card is the best bet.  I would definately go over your plans with your dealer, they are more than willing to help you out with various options.

I don't personally have my Amiga hooked up to my pegasos, but that's because I cheated ;-)  I just put my Amiga's hdd into my Pegasos and copied the everything over at once :-D
