Title: HDD & CD/DVD on Efika?
Post by: Fingers on January 22, 2009, 07:38:15 AM
Asking here as there seem to be quite a few Efika owners on this board.

Although I've read that the Efika doesn't officially support more than one IDE device at once...has anyone had luck running a CD or DVD drive with the HDD still in place (two IDE devices on the same cable/chain)?

The empty slim optical drive hole in my Efika's case keeps asking me! :-)

The IDE interface does not support extending the hard drive away from the board (as in the case of a splitter cable) and does not support multiple devices. I have read that doing so not only will not work, but could damage the EFIKA.

I have got a CD-ROM drive on my EFIKA connected by USB. I'm not using a slim drive, but you could use something like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-External-Slim-Case-for-Laptop-CD-DVD-Rom-DVD-W_W0QQitemZ220335562683QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item220335562683&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318). Take the guts out and there will just be a little PCB which will connect to the CD-ROM drive and convert it to USB.

Note that I have no idea whether that particular one will work on the EFIKA or fit your optical drive. It's just an idea. My only experience is with a standard 5.25" CD-ROM and a 40 way IDE->USB1.1 converter, which worked.

The adapter I use is this one (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35057).

OK, I won't even try it...thanks for the warning Moto! :-)

Might try your idea of modding an external enclosure's guts, which looks good to me.

I know for sure that they will fit some laptop CD drives as I have used one with a ThinkPad drive which I took out of a T23 laptop.

You could also try mounting your EFIKA CD drive how I did (http://www.mashley.net/tray.mov) :-D

Had to download QTLite (http://www.codecguide.com/qt_lite.htm) on Windows but it works.

A couple of years ago when my main home machine was a PC, Apple provided a PC/Win full version of Quicktime (presumably to steer people towards their hardware).

From what you said...they no longer do? :getmad:

There's a MorphOS version of VLC Media Player. That might play Quicktime files. You can find it here (http://aminet.net/search?query=vlc).

The do.

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

The download page will offer the Windows version if you're on a Windows machine. QTLite (linked to above) allows you to play Quicktime files (in your browser IIRC) without the full Apple version of Quicktime.

If you have iTunes installed then you already have Quicktime.

I used one of these to connect a CD Drive to my Efika:

(Obviously with a IDE to laptop CD drive converter :))

I'm sure there's other simalar things for sale in your area of the world :)
