Title: Morph OS 2 . . .
Post by: Edpon on January 19, 2009, 10:25:01 PM
Hi,
Has anyone gotten the newwest version of Morph OS? I was really wanting to know how good it works on the Efika system as well. Would you recommend it, and if so, why? Thanks.

Using it now very nice and light, but
don't expect it to impress you on efika.
That system doesn't do it much justice
it you want to sample it cheaply, then
install it on efika and try it out.
it plays audio(not cd'd)video(not dvd)
on mplayer nicely, picture viewer,
sputnik browser, unrar, and more...
I use MorphOs everyday, only drawbacks, again
is the efika limitation, particlar usb
under power issues mostly on 3dlayer
setting.

I have MorphOS2.2 running on a peg1, and I'm waiting for the port to the mac laptops ;-)

I run MorphOS 2.2 on my Efika and it works fine. With 2.1 I sometimes had some weird behaviour, but with 2.2 I haven't experienced any bad behaviours yet.
E.g. tonight I had the Efika powered up to listen to some music, watch a youtube vid, browse the net with AWeb and Sputnik, check my mails with SimpleMail and play WipeOut 2097 for a quarter of an hour and to lurk around on #morphos with WookieChat. Uptime w/o a reboot was >4 hrs, then I decided to switch off the device because I moved over to my bedroom (where my netbook is handier than the Efika and I had to run a serious word processor because I had work for a couple of hrs b4 going to sleep now).
On my Efika usb works quite reliable, but others seem to have less luck in that regard.

The Efika is a nice system to play around with, but still I prefer my Pegasos over Efika.

Is it coming out for Mac's? Or is that just another rumor? If it is, SWEET ! I already have a good one for it to run on. . .

Would have replied earlier, but I was at work...no MorphOS in use there I'm afraid.

Now at home & posting from my Efika running MorphOS 2.2

I think for a "hobby" OS it is very nice & comes with some good features.

Using it on an Efika you can tell it'd be much easier/smoother on something like a Peg, but it's still cool on the Efika! :-D

Spunik does have it's problems, like not being able to use Hotmail, which I suspect may have something to do with SSL encryption. Any input on that would be nice :getmad:

All-in-all, buy yourself an Efika, stick MorphOS on it & if you like it enough to pay, register it...you won't regret it!

PZ.

I'm using MorphOS2 on Peg1, it works fine and I'd even say that it's the most comprehensive OS release on Amiga front ever! I'm not sure if you can get most of it with Efika though. As it's bit limited in some ways and there seems to be some small issues on some users too. But might be cheap way to get into OS etc. But I haven't seen Efika ever, so listen other comments on that ;)

Yes it is, at least for *some* Mac's. See here for yourself (videos and photos):

@Takemehomegrandma

Thanks for the links. I was really hoping my Core 2 Duo Mac would be able to play Morph OS 2 - 2.2. Aparently not. Now I have to find a Mac Mini, that's a G4 1.4Ghz model 8( There was something else I was wondering. HOW do you get the Morph OS if you don't buy the Efika board?

You can download MorphOS 2.2 here (http://morphos-team.net/). For now it only runs on Pegasos 1&2 and Efika boards, the Mac version is not yet released.

MorphOS will support *all* G4 Mac Mini models. Best choice of course is the silent upgrade G4 1.5 GHz model, because it comes with 64MB VRAM. All other G4 Mac Minis offer only 32 MB VRAM.
Once MorphOS for the Mac Mini will have been released it will be available for download from www.morphos-team.net.
Currently you can dl MorphOS 2.2 for Pegasos 1 &2 and Efika, plus MorphOS 1.4.5 for Amiga accelerator boards BlizzardPPC and CyberstormPPC.

I use Tubexx, it is a very convenient ARexx application. Check it out here: http://www.webalice.it/pgermano/tubexx/main.html

You need some goodies though like a working Arexx installation, wget, MPlayer, Mencoder. But it is a really nice programm, you're not only able to watch vids, but also to save end transcode them.

I'd grab one :)

Or is there one for VMWare?

Some use separate programs like Tubexx, but I use GetVideo-script (http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/getvideo) which can be integrated in the browsers. For example with IBrowse, you can select "Play video" or "Save video" on the youtube video page with right mouse button. Or over a link pointing to certain video etc.

I did some shopping around and found out that the 1.5GHz Mac Mini comes with an Intel intergrated video chip. That wouldn't work, at least according to the MorphOS hardware requirements list, with MorphOS. Also, which version do I get for the Mac Mini? The Efika or Pegasus download. Thanks again.

You will need a Mac mini G4 (PowerPC based), there is no public release available yet. So there's nothing for you to download.

What you probably would want to look for, is the 1.5GHz "Mac Mini (Late 2005)" version, look in the table here:

Well, doh! The Mac Mini download obviously! :-P ;-) When it's released, of course... :-)

Just to confirm there was both a PPC and Intel 1.5 Mini.

Yeah, the "Mac Mini (Early 2006)" comes in 2 versions, the low end version has a 1.5Ghz Intel Core Solo CPU...

I guess one should include "G4" as a key word in searches... ;-)

Well, the point with auctions (eBay) is to drive up prices! :-)

I guess you could always look directly into the local Mac community. Forums, paper magazines, etc. Search for ads, or put in an "I want to buy a Mac G4 1.5GHz" ad yourself? I think the price will be more favorable then...
