Title: Unhealthy CDTV!
Post by: reddwarfer on January 11, 2009, 03:29:10 PM
Picked up a CDTV this morning with keyboard/mouse/disk drive/disk loader - lucky me I thought!

Went to test it out a minute ago and Im greated with the fan spinning as soon as the unit is plugged in with the power button off. When I press the power button, nothing happens.
I've scooted around the PCB pushing the ROMs home...no change.

Nothing is displayed on the TV screen or LCD screen either.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Kev

Disconnect everything inside and outside apart from the power supply and the TV and see what happens.

Where did you find it?

You cannot search for them on eBay these days without getting 100's of auctions listing ladies underwear for fat blokes.

I picked up the CDTV at the local car boot sale along with a C64 ;-)

Right, unplugged everything internally apart from the PSU and LCD...we don't have lift off...

I double checked voltages from the PSU and all 'appears' fine there with a 12v input and a 0.2 volt input. There doesn't appear to any voltage from other wires - if this is based on the A500 - shouldn't there also be a +5v?
Then again, if im getting a 12v, I should be getting a 5v if it existed?

EDIT: Just had another idea, test the CDROM power input plug. The 12v is working okay, the +5v is only kicking out 0.2v...maybe this is my problem!
Time for a bit of PSU tinkering  :-D

You really need that +5 V. So you indeed have to take a closer look at that PSU.

Which car boots do you go to? The only thing I ever see at Car boots are the old B&W Gameboys everything else seems to be flogged off via ebay.

I only tend to go to car boots occasionally and the ones I do go to, I havn't found anything old computer related for a year or 2 so this was a lucky find!!

I don't reckon the owner knew much about it, he said that when it was given to him he used it to play Audio CDs before it broke.

EDIT:
Had a look at the board, and there appears to be a missing fuse...going to get a replacement one tomorrow and see if it blows again. I can't see anything physically wrong with any of the components...so erm anyone got any ideas?

This thread has come to a close, I've got the old girl working again :-D
Popped into my local electronics specialists with the PSU and they helped me out with a replacement fuse and it hasn't blown after playing a bit of music and racing in Lotus Turbo Challenge II!

Thats another CDTV for the working register  ;-)

Congratulations!
It's always a nice warm feeling when something can be repaired :-)

If you miss the remote, Amigakit & Vesalia still sell them NEW :-)
