I already posted a question in another thread, but I thought I would admit my retro situation here.
I started with a Timex Sinclair TS1000 many many moons ago, and progressed through the Timex 2068 and Sinclair QL, to a Amiga 1000, and then a Amiga 2000. Those were the days...
I have a GVP 030 card in my A2000, and a Flicker Fixer, and a Picasso card, and a Bridgecard. I got started programming MS QuickBasic on the Bridgecard, writing apps to use where I work. From there I went on a WinTel downhill slide, and ended up spending lots of time writing Visual Basic apps to use at work.
Back in my Timex Sinclair days, I scratch built a large multi-scene stage lighting controller, with a TS1000 computer in it. The old "One Aught" has 18 channel A/D and D/A converters for reading scenes fron the lighting controller sliders, and "writing" secnes back to the channel outputs on the lighting controller. I used an additional cross fader for switching between computer generated scenes, and scenes set with the sliders on the controller.
Anyway... I'm kinda interested in using my Amiga 2000 again. She still boots from HD, and has OS 3.1 installed. I take it from reading on here that I should check the battery?
I never really did much with my A2000 when I used it, except play games, and I couldn't get it to play many games once I got the 030 accelerator and OS 3.1. I also could only get one or two games to play from HD.
I think I played with the internet with a modem a little before I stopped using my A2000, because I have AmiTCP and Mosaic installed. I have cable internet now, and I'm wondering if I could get a Ethernet card for my A2000 and get on the net?
I'm also open for any recommendation for games and apps for my A2000. Is there an OS update I should get? Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
-
Welcome!

Any suggestions for a ethernet card for my A2000?
-
First things first, whip that nasty battery out and inspect for damage!
-
You may need a new clock battery (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=293) to replace an old existing leaking one.
To reply to your ethernet card question, a new alternative is the X-Surf 3cc Zorro card with EasyNet (http://easynet.amigakit.com) software included here:

OK. Will do ASAP.
What is What is Minimig and the ACUBE?
I'm getting excited :-D

Minimig description, pictures and details are here:

Hope this helps!

Cool. Your Amiga came out of the closet.
When you switched to 3.1, you should have held down the two mouse button before booting in order to make your 2000 "compatible" with your older games. In any case, if you're going to play some, be sure to head on over to WHDLoad site (http://www.whdload.de/) and put your disk games on the harddrive so that you don't have to deal with the swapping anymore.
Unless you just happen to find an 68060 accelerator with a bunch of RAM on it in the attic too, stick with OS3.1
-
Thanks for all the info and tips.
Is the battery that blue barrel shaped thing under the drive bays? If so, how do we get that puppy out? It looks like it's spot welded to the connectors that go into the motherboard.

I connected an old VGA monitor to the Flicker Fixer output, and it works. Whoo hoo! Flicker free high res!
I found the user manual for the Picasso board. Now I've gotta dig around and see if I can find the cable to use
-
Found the cable for the Picasso. Dug out a 21 inch monitor that someone was tossing, and hooked it up. The Picasso display looks good
Still can't do much with the old girl. The only game that will run off the hard drive is Megaball. I've gotta dig out a null modem cable and hook it up to a WinTel so I can get WHDLoad working. So far I haven't been able to format any floppies and read them in PC0: or PC1: :boohoo:
BTW: Turns out my accelerator os a 33mhz GVP 68040, not an 030. Can I still get additional RAM for that thing, and would it be worth it?
What do you all do with your retro Amiga's? I've gotta get mine on the net.
Thanks to all for the help!

you have a very good machine there. you probably can get more ram but is likely to be the annoying custom simms that gvp made and they tend to cost more. 4 meg is bare minimum i would say. you probably need 8 or more to get on the net. pc0: is the dosdriver for ms formatted disks. you probably have a file in sys:devs/dosdriver called pc0 or pc1. move it to sys:storage/dosdrivers if you don't want to format your floppies to msdos.
the thing is with your picasso card plugged in, unless its a picasso 4 you won't see games on your monitor. you may be able to take the output of your flicker-fixer IF IT SCAN_DOUBLES AS WELL AS FLICKER FIX and see them that way.
i mainly play games and do a bit with scala

Obviously, if the battery is soldered to the motherboard, grab your soldering iron :flame: and take it off. Looks like you lucked out. If you look at some peoples pictures, those type of batteries turn into fuzzy acid factories and ruin motherboards.
Be sure to give the floppy drives a super good cleaning.
-
Should I try to remove the battery from the contacts, or remove the contacts from the motherboard? There are two "pins" going into the motherboard from each "contact", and it's a multi layer board with plated through holes, and that is tricky de-soldering... Should I just try to clip off the contacts?
-
Depends on how skillful you are with the iron. You can clip them off if you don't want to risk it. The Amiga will run fine without the battery. You'll just have to set the date and time each time you turn it on.
-
Hi KatManDEW, Welcome back to Amiga. I started on a ZX81 myself. Back in 1982. OMG 26 years ago.
If you want a better way of getting stuff off PC and onto Amiga you need to get a scsi CDROM and hook it into your SCSI chain. You've got a spot for it.. (o:.
Null modem is soooo slow.
Good luck
PS: Loopz is a great game. (o:
-
Thanks again for all the feedback and help!
I think my Picasso is a I or II ;-(
Here's a pic of my Timex Sinclair 1000 inside my stage lighting controller. I built all the Timex Sinclair add-on hardware except for the floppy controller. I etched, drilled, and assembled all the boards in the lighting controller.

@KatManDEW,
Always good to see someone new, um, old at the party.
Depending on the card you have you may have trouble getting a X-Surf to work. I had a heck of a time on my GeForce 030/40Mhz.
Maybe it's a firmware thing.
Chris
-
I love the fact that you worked on your machine with a good ol'trusty beer  Thats how I start all my hobby projects
... if only I could get away with that at work, things could be much better!
Welcome back to AMI!

That doesn't sound good... I've always had a heck of a time getting anything to work on my Amiga :boohoo: I can't figure out how to get WHDLoad to work...
I got that nasty old bettery out of there, and the Bridegecard and 5-1/4 inch floppy. She's back in the computer room now.
Can I use any old SCSI CD drive? Do I just get a longer SCSI cable with an extra connector, and daisy chain it with the HD on the GVP accelerator? Are there any drivers needed?
-
Good job removing the battery! I replaced mine with a rechargable cordless phone battery (confirm polarity first).
The The flickerfixer output should be able to go into the input port on the Picasso II with the proper cable. This way the Picasso will pass thru native Amiga screen modes AND output it's own resolutions. No monitor cable swapping required. Have you done this?
A longer SCSI cable and SCSI CDrom should be all that's required (no drivers, this is an Amiga). You will have to set unique SCSI ID numbers (0 thru 6) for all devices connected. If the CDrom is the last internal SCSI device on the ribbon cable, I think it will need termination. All other internal devices should have termination turn OFF. This termination scheme will be true of any external devices as well.
You could try for a SCSI CDwriter as well, these turn up on e-Bay from time2time.
Your machine has much potential added to it already. A minority of us try to use Amigas for as much as possible, like surfing, Mp3s, graphics, office, faxing, etc. This post came from an Amiga.
It would help others help you if you give more information, like motherboard revision, rom rev on the GVP SCSI controller, fast ram available, etc.
-
You will need a cdrom filesystem though...the idefix97 pakage works well with scsi cdroms.
-
old trusty AsimCDFS (http://aminet.net/search?query=asimcdfs)
Programs to unpack them (http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Services/PDA/AmigaCompression.shtml)
What problems are you having with WHDload?

I'm jealous. I want to post with my Amiga!
Do I need to inspect for physical revision numbers on components, is there a software way to do it? Workbench says 865,072 Graphics mem, and 3,962,872 other mem. My GVP board only has one memory slot filled.
-
You need a Video Toaster in that baby.
:-D
-
You'll probobly have to inspect. The roms normally have a white paper label. The custom coprocessors on the MB will require you to interpret their part numbers with info on the net.
There are a number of system diagnostic/interrogation utilities available on aminet: SysInfo, Dostrace, SnoopDos, SCSIinquire, Scout, AIBB, etc, that are very useful. I've never used them though to get chip revisions (may not work).
You probably have 1 Meg of chip ram on the MB (typical for a 2000) and 4 Megs of fast memory on the GVP. I think GVP made 16 Meg modules that are now harder to find.
GVP made great peripherals and expansions. Unfortunatly, they insisted on making custom memory modules. Someone else may suggest other memory alternatives if you can't find more GVP.

Thanks for the link to the CD file system.
I can unpack stuff OK. I have DirOpus.
When I try to run the installer for the games on the WHDLoad site, it goes through the motions and then says "Sorry.... an Error has occured! GETENV: String too long"

Wow! I'm really getting excited! I did Google search for GVP RAM yesterday and founf that memory at Software Hut. Do you think I should get three 4 meg SIMM's to fill the slots on my GVP 040?
I still don't understand exactly what the Minimig and the ACUBE are? Are they hybrid machines that run the Amiga OS?
What's the "ultimate Amiga" now-a-days (not including a Toaster). A 4000 tower? Acube?
I did find the cable to connect my Flicker Fixer to the input on my Picasso. I have some purdy video now.
Damn you guys for stirring up my old Amiga lust! :-D
-
How to Amiga WB (http://www.amigau.com/amigarealm/thisoldworkbench/html/towb19.html)
Try that. Tons of info on setting up your workbench and other useful info. Perhaps you need to replace Install (in your C: drawer) with Installer.
Minimig is just a modern incarnation of an A500, so that all the various specialty chips are combined into a single chip, with the means of using PC monitors, mice, & keyboards. All on a tiny PCB. You put game programs that are in ADF format on a Compact Flash, which acts as a HD. Its a portable Amiga.
Be sure to contact Joe at Software Hut about the memory. Their website is seriously out of date and stuff they list hasn't been there for years. He'll usually get back to you pretty quickly.
-
Awesome info again Amiduffer! I'm going to read that site pretty close. I nver had a real good understanding of my Amiga back in the day because I was too busy building Timex Sinclair hardware and the stage lighting controller, and after that learning QuickBASIC on the Bridgecard.
I think I'm going to order three more SIMM's for my GVP 040, and the X-Surf. I can't find any of my null modem cables, but hopefully I won't need it if I get the X-Surf.

@KatManDEW,
Depends on what card. My G-Force will only handle 16Mb max so I have to keep one slot empty to account for PIV. I'll bet your card can handle more.

The instruction manual for my GVP 040 says it can use up to four 16 meg SIMM's. I wonder if the 16's are still available?
Can I expand the chip RAM on my A2000?
What's a PIV?
-
Funny side note about my GVP 040 accelerator... It was of course horribly expensive, and I had no real justification for purchasing it. But I ordered it anyway, and I came home from work in a blizzard one day, and found a scribbled note on my door from the postman that said "Back porch". I didn't have a back porch at the time, but I went to the back steps, which were covered in snow, and found nothing. I did see a yellow spot in the snow where a dog had urinated. And through the melted yellow snow I saw something... It was the package with my GVP 040. :-o
-
@KatManDEW,
"Can I expand the chip RAM on my A2000?"
Yes, I put a DKB Megachip in mine. You'll have to keeps your eyes busy, they are not that common anymore but I still see them from time to time.
Chris.

Does it help?
Anyone know where to get NoDrawNoFill.LHA which is mentioned on that Workbench website? I can't find it on Aminet.
I got a new version of the Installer, and WHDLoad works now, but I finally realized that you need the games to go with the loader.
-
Whoo hoo! I got a bunch of stuff working on the old girl. I even found a screen grabber that works with my graphics setup.

Seems the Amiga bug claims another!....Welcome back!

I still don't understand exactly what the Minimig and the ACUBE are? Are they hybrid machines that run the Amiga OS?
Acube is an Italian company that manufacture a PPC board which can run the new OS4.x.
Google them or you can go visit the hysterical women on amigaworld.net for more information.
-

-
Doy you know anyone using the Acube?
That's OS 3.1 and MUI 2. I just ordered MUI 3.8, and now I have to wait for them to send the registration
The Start Menu is this one here;
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/StartMenu2
It's kinda cool.

There have been a fair few sold.
The Amigaone (also PPC) that came before it sold just over a thousand units and ran OS4. IIRC there is a version that runs on PPC accelerators for classic amigas, but the resale value of these is horrible (I mean expensive). I think some were fetching over £500
-
@KatManDEW,
"Does it help?"
It helps a whole bunch, especially if your running OS3.5 or
3.9 with hi or truecoler screens. The environment runs a little large.
Chris
-
Is 2 meg the most you can get?
Is OS 3.5 still available? Would I be better off with 3.5 or 3.9?
I just found that Board Master and Image Master are now free ware!
http://www.datapipe-blackbeltsystems.com/amiga.html
I wanted Board Master SO BAD back in the day...
-
@KatManDEW,
2 meg is all can get or will need, the extra fast will get your DMA rocking and that is where the real horsepower is.
Have fun is the main thing. I hope you still have a good stash of software.
Chris

@KatManDEW,
OS3.9 is nicer and you can still find it.

No, I don't. Is there anywhere to get some decent software for it, other than Aminet?
-
@KatManDEW,
There are some download site out there. The best other place is in the forums here and AmigaWorld or of course E-Bay.
Chris
-
Found someo neat looking software here;
http://www.amiga-arena.de/
Had to run the site through the Google translator, but it worked well. Some of it is AGA stuff, but I tried one of the other ones and it worked on my A2000.
One of my old PC's was an all SCSI system, and it has a Plextor CD burner in it, so I moght be able to use it in my A2000.

Sounds good.
So far, you have a choice of using a null modem cable + Amiga Explorer (part of the Amiga Forever software from Cloantro), buying a Deneb card so that you have USB capabilities, your CD drive, and the old floppy disks.
I've found that Amiga Explorer works very nicely.
-
@KatManDEW,
For some reason I had better luck with "Make CD" Than I did with "Burn It". "Frying Pan" May be the least expensive.

I've tried several different null modem cables and can't get Amiga Explorter to work. It runs on the Amiga end, but it always fails to open on the PC side. I ordered a couple new null modem cables the day before yesterday.

What's the best photo/image editor for the Amiga? Can I convert PC images to use on my Workbench screen?
Is DOpus 5.xx still available?
I received a registration key for MUI, named MUI.KEY, but I don't know what to do with it?
Would a Highway USB Controller with Norway Ethernet for Highway USB be OK instead of an X-Surf?
If you were going had an A200, and you wanted to get another Amiga, would you get a A1200, or a A3000, or a A4000, or an ACube? Something with a tower case?

They're called CF to IDE adaptors. It'll let you use Compact Flash cards in place of a harddrive IF you use IDE.

If you don't mind to use a paint program (not exactly what you want), Cloanto (the same company who make Amiga Explorer) have their paint program for free.
Is DOpus 5.xx still available?
Nope. But new 4.15 is available for free.

A hat? A paper airplane? Nah, just toss the unpacked key into the L drawer.
Would a Highway USB Controller with Norway Ethernet for Highway USB be OK instead of an X-Surf?
??? Subway is an USB controller for the A1200! Norway is (sadly) out of production.
But why on hearth you want USB? "Because I can?" If you want just Ethernet, check what kind of bridgeboard you have and toss an old, trusted ISA NIC into your A2000!
If you were going had an A2000, and you wanted to get another Amiga, would you get a A1200, or a A3000, or a A4000, or an ACube? Something with a tower case?
I'm a die-hard fan of "classic" Amiga. I have some here. My favourite is the A2000, hands down.
Notice that I have a towerized A1200 with a 040 CPU, 64Mb Fast RAM, Mediator, Voodoo card, PCI Ethernet NIC and big HD and DVD.
And Acube is the maker of the SAM 440ep board, not the name of the computer.
Have you ever heard of using a memory card as a hard disk? I saw something about someone using on on a website...

As other mentioned, Compact Flash cards (some brands, be warned) works as IDE HDs very well. To use them with your SCSI controller, you need a SCSI to IDE bridge (most famous is the Acard 7720).
So you need: the CF itself, the IDE to CF adaptor and then the Acard SCSI to IDE. Lightning fast to boot and no moving parts. Prices are not SO "yummy", BE WARNED. Small units are cheap, of course.
-
Very interesting rkauer. That's an awesome sounding A1200 system you have! I might have to think about getting an A1200 and slowly beefing it up. What do you like about it versus an A3000 or A4000?
Copying my MUI.KEY file to the Libs drawer took care of my MUI registration. Thanks!
How do I utilize the registration info listed on the Make CD site? The registration screen for Make CD has a entry box for "Registration number", and ghosted extry boxes for name and address.
The registration info on that site says:
Serial Number: 555555555
License Key: H8HsRww)7Uz)!iXE5PUMfgP#VymA6
-
I went digging around in the attic looking for some of my old Amiga stuff, and lo and behold I found a A1000, a external disk drive, and a bare bones A2000 with what appears to be a dead power supply.
Several of my friends had Amiga's, and I forgot that I inherited some of the hardware when they gave up on it.
I still can't find my bridgecard, and the combo audio amp and joystick autofire box that I built.
If I reinstall my bridgecard, and an NIC, how will that work? What network files will I need for MS-DOS? I've never used a network without Windows...

-
I found my bridgecard, but I'm not sure it it's worth reinstalling. It's a 286. I can't remember how it worked, ie: as far as hard drive access. I still have the files and icons for it on the Amiga side.
Also found my home made audio amp box, with joystick/mouse switcher and rapid fires. Whoo hoo!
-
I got the MakeCD32D beta update, which does not require registration, and I burned a CD with my Migrant, and it worked! Whoo hoo!
I found the app on Aminet which allows the Amiga to use a NIC with the Bridgeboard, so now I've gotta dig around and find an old ISA NIC.
Here's the old girl with my home made audio amp and joystick auto fire box, which is a pretty sweet little deal, if I do say so myself :-)

For a simple system probably just a standard A1200 with a fast RAM expansion or 030 accelerator card with RAM and an IDE adapte so you could plug a CD drive in

A couple of years ago I decided to get an Amiga 2000 that had been sitting around doing nothing up and running. Because I could not aford to purchase an Amiga 4000(Wish I had not sold my A40000 in 1999).
Any way I got the machine up and running with a keyboard I then purchased a Geforce 040 from the USA off ebay.I wanted to get the machine to run one of the newer version's of amiga OS so I purchased Amiga OS 3.5 and also a set of 3.1 Roms for the Amiga 2000 and after doing all this my Fusion forty could not be reconized by the new Kickstart Roms. So I found another Amiga user who blow me som new roms for the Fusion forty so it would work with kick start 3.1.
But I could not get the machine to install OS 3.5 and eventually gave up and the machine has been sitting doing nothing for 2-3 years. Could anyone on here spend some time to help me get OS 3.5 installed.
I have manged to get the machine working with a fuged version of 3.1 and I can Read CD's with it but when I try to install 3.5 it fails.I suspect it may be the ICD is not compatable.
Any pointers or advice would be grateful received. Or if someone has a working startup-sequence on there machine that has the same hardware as me maybe they could post it on here so I can use it.
Amiga 2000
Geforce 040
ICD SCSI controller.
Thanks
