Title: Monitor 1084S-D1
Post by: sim085 on January 09, 2009, 03:48:54 PM
Hi,

I had ordered a monitor 1084S-D1 from ebay last November. Yesterday the monitor arrived. Unfortunately it was not exactly how described on ebay!

The first thing I noticed of course is the damage to the outside plastic. One side of the back lid is fractured while the door covering the front-panel controls is broken off.

I think it will be next to impossible to fix the back lid, however I can try to fix the door covering the front-panel. Has anyone ever tried to do this and maybe have some suggestions?

Also I do not know if this is a problem or not; the cable which connects the 1084S-D1 to the A500+, the head which connects to the 1084S-D1 has some missing pins? Is this normal? When I connected it to my A500+ the monitor worked fine... it turn yellowish for a moment but then everything turned to normal after I re-started my Amiga. Anything to worry about?

Regards,
Sim085

Hi Sim085,

Sad to hear your 1084 was damaged. Perhaps it got damaged during transit. You might be able to work out a partial refund from the seller?

The front lid (and the power button) are known to break on the 1084DS. If any parts came off the lid you could try and glue it back together or perhaps find a faulty 1084 somewhere and take its front lid off and place it on yours.

How many pins does the connector that goes in the monitor have? Mine has 6.

Hi,

The cable has six pins as well ... so I guess this is how it originally came out. Regarding the door covering the front controls I thought of maybe doing some custom fix.

It would be nice to get a 1084S-D1 which does not work to get its case - but I  do not know how much of these could be available and at what cost!

Also I wanted to ask something. The 'S' in 1084S-D1 means that it is stereo ... so does that mean I should hear sound coming out of my monitor?

Hi sim085

I had an Amiga M1438S, so yes I think the S means Stereo. If there is a triangular shape in the control button area, this indicates the volume adjust button.

Hi sim085,

Whereabouts are you?  I have a faulty 1084S-D1 which you are welcome to.   :-)

I'd talk to the seller regarding the damage.  Unless it was packed professionally the chances are good that the damage came in transit to you.   I had this happen with a C128 monitor last year.  Looked great on the web but was damaged when it arrived.

I don't think I'll spend additional $$ on a monitor that has to be shipped unless it's very rare and the seller uses a professional to pack it.

Me too, I have had two bad experiences when getting monitors delivered, both times monitor was damaged in transit by the delivery company, and one of these times the monitor was professionally packed using expanding foam but the bloody delivery company still managed to break it - that's why now I always collect monitors in person.

Hi Impactor, I will send you a PM to ask some questions ... I am from Malta :)

I do not think I will buy anything from ebay for some time ... the last two items I received where not exactly as described. However the monitor does work, so I am not that sad :)

btw - Something else; when I switch the monitor it makes a loud whistling noise! I checked on amiga-hardware.com and here it says "A loud whistling noise indicates a bad flyback transformer (also known as an LOPT)". However I do not know what that means .. and if it can be fixed!

Hi again sim085

Try a good TV repair shop, after all a monitor is only like a TV without the station tuning equipment. Maybe you have a local TV technician who could have a look at it for you.

Thanks,

However I was just wondering what a bad flyback transformer means. The monitor works fine ... at least the picture is displayed correctly :)

The flyback transformer is used to generate the high voltage needed for the CRT. It's driven off the horizontal sweep that moves the beam across the screen. Using the sweep frequency - 15kHz - instead of "mains" 50/60 hz means the transformer needs less iron. But it also means that if something is mechanically loose in there, it can vibrate at 15kHz and be annoying to those who can still hear that high. ;-)

I've seen a lot of 1084's flybacks actually break their soldered connections to the main board....
Take it to a tv shop if it's a problem.

"S" is definetely for Stereo. Glad that your monitor is working functionally, but if you will change it in the future go for a 1084S-P1 model. "P" stands for Philips. ;-)

I will definitely take it to the repairs show ... however how urgent is it? Could this problem break the whole monitor?

I bought the 1084S-D1 because of how it looks :)

That's impossible to say. The noise isn't a sign of impending failure, just a side effect of the frequencies used in there. It can fail without making a noise, or can whistle like a teapot for years.

Agree, mine has squeeled like a strangled starfish for years but never fails.

I had a squealer for years.  A good smack upside the monitor usually silenced it.

FWIW, I haven't seen an intact 1084 front panel even once in all the years I've been shopping at surplus stores.
I've seen dozens of 1084's and 1084S's, and every single one has either no front panel at all, or one that is hanging from one hinge.

The plastic power cable guide on the bottom of the monitor is usually broken as well.

Hi,

I know this may look like a stupid question; but in order to hear sound from my monitor then do I have to contact some cables from the monitor to the A500 Audio connectors (the red and black one on the back)?

If yes, then does any cable fit? Anyone knows how I can build a replacer?

Sim085

Yes, you should connect the red and black stereo outputs of your A500 to the corresponding inputs on your 1084. You can use any old RCA style plugs. The same that you use with hifi equipment. Chances are you already have one of those cables lying around and if not you can buy them at virtually any consumer electronics store in your neighbourhood.

EDIT:

Plugs like these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector)
