Title: Can OS3.5 be installed without a CDROM ?
Post by: Sparky on January 05, 2009, 03:39:52 AM
I found my copy of 3.5 in the bottom of a box, but my only Amiga these days is an A1200 with no CDROM (and no dual IDE thingy either).

Is there anyway to install OS 3.5 other than the CD ?

I've tried pulling the disk from the A1200 and attaching it to a PC running WinUAE, that happily does the install to the disk and boots it with no issues at all, but when I move the disk back to the A1200 it just hangs up on a black screen :(
I'm pretty certain I've matched the config of the WinUAE A1200 to my real A1200 (68030+68882 32mb etc etc)

Any pointers ?

Would I be able to copy the files from the CD to the hard disk (via WinUAE), then put rhe disk back in the A1200 and then run the installer from there ?  Or is there any copy protection for the disk ?

Thanks!

Mark

sparky, yes it can! I did it this past summer by copying all the files from my CD onto the CF card in my pcmcia port and loading it directly from there! worked great and I also recommend you install both boing bad 1 and 2 updates ;-)

Didn't quite work for me :-(

The OS3.5 installer ran OK when I copied it to the disk, but after installing the pre then main distributions it would never come up after a the reboot.

I think it does the first boot and patches the ROm, but the 2nd boot then hangs on a black screen for a few minutes and then just gives me the "Insert a disk" animation :-(

I'm guessing something is not quite right with the ROM patch ?  Any guesses or things I can try ?

Thanks

Mark

I've installed it from a PC to a real Amiga (an A3000) using a null-modem serial cable and Siamese to mount the PC's CD ROM as if it was an Amiga drive.  It took forever, but it worked.

Are you quite sure about the matching config?

I´ve done the same thing with OS3.9, and it works.

Maybe you´ve installed UAE P96?

Give it a second look over, and try to shortcut booting by going into early startup menu, and see if you can access the CF card from there, and from CLI after a "boot with no startup sequance".

My two cents

-- EDIT:
Didn´t read your second posting good enough, okay. You seem to have setpatch run to patch it to new KS (3.5).

Try diabling all modules to the setpatch (NOROMUPDATES) and then see if it boots.

Then, secondly bring them back one at a time.

Using the editor witout WB loaded can be a pain (it neets lots of stuff, and won´t work well with "no startup sequence" - so try getting a simpler editor for debugging)
