I've installed a 4gb CF card on the internal ide port on my A1200 but when I boot into workbench 3.1 and select hdtools no hard drive is detected to partition.
Any ideas as to why?

Have you got a CF reader on your PC? I find it easier to setup CF's using WINUAE.
One thing you could try is a (slow) format using your PC.
What make is your CF, some are not compatible.
Are you using an interface card or have you got the adapter plugged straight into the port?

I've got a cf to 44 pin adaptor

Have you checked hdtool.info to make sure that the device is set right? I usual prep my CF with Winuae and still find myself forgeting to correct this when I move it to a real migy, always forget and leave it set to uaehf.scsi or whatever.
Also, I've had all kinds of grief with 3.1 when using partitions near 4gb.

I found the problem - I had a CF adaptor with the female plug (to connect directly to the motherboard) but had a 44 pin ribbon and a set of 44 pins (to connect female to female).
The pins are on a different orientation so I got a CF adaptor with pins and it works great now.

@Miloo
Good to here you got it working I setup a 4GB CF card in an A1200 about a year ago and it works very nicely.
It a lot faster and quieter than the 80MB HD that my old A1200 desktop originally has as well as just a bit bigger ;-)

@Dwyloc
Yes I'm very impressed of the speed and the total price.
I spent about £20 on all the parts.

Now ditch FFS and put PFS3 on that baby, and you will be even more impressed... it's pretty neat to watch 3.9 boot in a matter of a few seconds :-)

In the past I used PFS2 but today I use SFS my self with works very well under both OS3.X and OS4.X.

glad you got it working Miloo...nothign like fast SILENT retro computing in 2009 :-D
