Title: Pitfalls of installing OS2 on an Amiga 2000?
Post by: orb85750 on December 17, 2008, 02:30:25 AM
Are there some well-known words of warning?  In particular, I am worried about not having all the driver disks for the currently working stuff, such as the 2091, and the 68030 accelerator card.  Also, will OS2.05 installation work with OS2.04 roms (at least that's how the roms are advertised -- I don't know if that is correct).  I would not be doing this if it were not necessary in order to gain compatibility with a certain board that apparently requires OS2.0.  But I'm worried about the net result of the whole process!  Thanks.

The 2091 and Commodore 020/030 boards need updated ROMs to work with Kickstart 2+, but odds are good they've already got them by this point in time. Otherwise there are no issues whatsoever. Just run the installer.

OK, are you saying that I probably don't need to worry about not having the driver disks for Commodore SCSI and accelerator boards, and that I can just throw in the OS2 installer disk and everything will seamlessly work?  I have never done an OS install on Amiga (never ever in the 2 decades since it has existed), which is why I'm apprehensive.  Thank you.

If you have the original packaging of whatever item you're going to install the items in question be it software or hardware usually have the green AMIGADOS 2 compatible sticker on them.

The boards currently inside the A2000 are older than OS2.0,
I think?  Commodore 2091 SCSI and Commodore 2630 accelerator.  I am not the original owner.  There is zero documentation and zero driver disks, unfortunately.

Any A2091 with a ROM version greater than 6 is OK for kickstart 2.0x.

The A2620/2630 is a Commodore board, no drivers needed at all!

I have used OS2 on an A2000/A2091/A2630 for years, you only need to change the KS ROM to 2, I currently use KS3.1 and have changed the ROMS on the A2091 to version 7 (kindly supplied by TjLaZer). but 6.6 work fine with WB2.04.
I think the only difference between WB2.04 & 2.05 is the PCMCIA slot and IDE support that was included on the A600.

Now you have me thinking.  Since I still have the OS3.1 install disks from my A1200, perhaps I should get all the required roms and upgrade the A2000 to OS3.1?  I wonder about back compatibility with older 3rd party boards, etc.  Any feeling for that?  Is there likely to be a compatibility difference/problem in choosing OS3.1 versus OS2 generally?

I use WB3.1 on my A2000 with A2091 (rom7) & A2630 (rom7) & a Microway AGA2000 Flicker Fixer in the video slot. I also have a Kickstart Rom switcher with KS1.3, as far as I can tell everything works fine.

I can not say if there will be any issues with third party boards as I do not have any...
