I've decided to upgrade my OS. I'm running OS 3.1
now and I've decided its time to upgrade.
Does anyone have any solid info on OS 4.0 ??
Lets say I have a box stock A3000, will OS 4.0
run on my A3k, I've seen rumors that a PPC is
required. If so, then forget OS 4.0.
Actually OS 3.1 has served me well but I'm thinking
why not upgrade. If OS 4.0 is going to be compatable
for my A3k then I'll wait, if not then I'll get OS 3.9.
Any facts or best guesses would help.

OS 4.0 is built around a new kernel, called ExecSG, which is a PowerPC native module. So, as a result, the OS requires a PowerPC card to work.

Wait wah??? Hasn't it always been the Exec kernel?

ExecSG is the new kernel. THere's a white paper published by Hyperion regarding it floating around.

PPC will be required and it's not 100% sure that all PPC boards will
be supported. THey are now working with Cyberstorm cards and there
have been discussions of getting OS4 to Blizzard PPC:s but it has not
been confirmed with ful certanity.

@jeffmix
Exec, yes. But Exec is no more. Hyperion's released a new kernel, called ExecSG.

Go ahead and get 3.9 for your classic. If any new boing bags come out there wil be some OS4 stuff in there, probably. When OS4 comes out I hope to hook in to my 2000 and access drives, no DD support on OS4.

iirc. there were rumours about Hyperion considering releasing 0x0-only version of AOS4.
Of course, that wouldn't be "full" OS4, unable to run PPC code (Without PPC at least), but would include some of changed parts (like user interface) that can easily be (also) compiled for 0x0
But of course, that's something that would likely happen (if it would) after release of PPC version...

@all
Hyperion have said time and time again - they only have a licence to produce a PPC version of OS4. Thats means they can't release an x86 or a 68K version.
So unless Amiga themselves release it, or Hyperion negotiate a change of contract it isn't going to happen.
Besides most of the changes to OS4 need the extra horsepower provided by a PPC.
