Hi there guys, i've wondering if our 030 accelerator boards would accept an M68030 (the full version) instead the stock EC030.
Maybe if we can install one of these we would not need to go for some 68882 FPU? Or it would be impossible to take part of the embedded FPU in the non EC 030?
Cheers!

AFAIK the 030 do not have internal FPU in any versions...
The EC (economic) do not have internal MMU.
EDIT: I have a Derringer board with a M68030. It do not have internal FPU. But i have an fpu in the fpu socket.
However, the MMU works just fine.... probably... it's at least present...

I don't understand the question, the Blizzard IV comes with a full 030 (with an MMU)... Very little Amiga software needs an FPU... waste of money...

Lots of cpu-intensive software eg 3d rendering, image processing, even ppaint works faster with fpu

My guess is he is convinced the M68030 has internal FPU and since he cannot see the fpu on his board he assumes his CPU is a EC 030...
But he needs a 040 or 060 to get FPU internal in the cpu...

Erm, i always have some kind of dislexy when talking about this... I tend to mix the terms FPU and MMU that are really different from each other and different devices...I'll restructure my question. I've heard there are some 68030's that have embedded FPU working, if that's so, would one of these work on the PGA socket having all capabilities? or as long as the design of the Bliz card has a dedicated FPU socket the FPU inside these "hipotetic" 030's would just not work?
This way is more clear i guess... And maybe these 030's are just gossip... Or maybe what i heard about is some 030's have non MMU... EC then? :-D I was just curious about it.
Arrgh! messed again!!!
Could somebody clarify me this point?

Again AFAIK the 030s do not have integrated FPUs in any versions.
However they do have MMUs except for the EC versions which do not have MMU.
For any Amiga related accelerator you have with a 030 you will always need to add a external 68881/68882 FPU if you want/need one.

Got it. So FPU embedded is ONLY for 040 and 060 series, what an EC030 has not is Memory Management Unit, not Floating Point Unit. FPU for 030 is always external 881/882 PGA or PLCC socketed.
Well i do need an FPU for Mac emulation you know, w/o it video is quite slow, but FPU can do quite C2P process...
I don't know how, but i messed AGAIN the terms so i came with this post... I guess i will need to write IT DOWN to not forget it again...
EC = NON MMU
Thank you guys :-D

No problem. It is very easy going wild in the forest of computer terms... :-)
If you want to know more, here (http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/taxonomy.jsp?nodeId=0162468rH3YTLC61654622) is a link to freescale. the manufacturers of the 68k series CPUs.
Mybe you find some interesting information...

No it really can't. FPU has nothing to do with C2P.
ShapeShifter does have a MMU aided video drivers (CardTrickEVD (http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/CardTrickEVD), MuEVD (http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/MuEVD)), however.

Aaaaargh!
See? THERE i go again
It seems i messed again MMU with FPU...
I've read time ago about these video drivers, like Savage or TurboEVD but i MESSED it again...
:madashell:
Thank you for the rectification Piru... I guess i'll need to be careful everytime i read about these two again, if not i will mess it up again... as usual...

MMU= memory management unit, used for eg screen mapping in C2P conversions, also virtual memory
FPU=floating point unit, speeds up maths calculations eg 3d rendering, image processing, mp3 encoding
