I recently bought the EasyNet A1200 networking package from AmigaKit completely forgetting that I wouldn't be able to use my 8mb fast ram expansion with it as it isn't pcmcia "friendly". So now I can run AmiTCP but I have only ~0.5mb of ram in which to run any additional software :-(
All I want to be able to do is transfer files to and fro from my SAM440ep running os4.1. Does anyone know of anything I can run on the 1200 that uses hardly any ram, a command line program perhaps? I'm also a bit clueless generally when it come to networking so any tips on the SAM end would be good to! :-)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Rudi.

Slave the A1200 HD on the SAM.

Change the RAM card to 4MB from 8MB - this will stop blocking the PCMCIA addresses
-
Did the software package come with Cardpatch and Cardreset?
When I installed EasyNet A1200 on my A1200, that has an Apollo 1240 in it, I had no pcmcia problems with these. They are available on Aminet otherwise.

I could do that I know but I want to keep the A1200 set up as it is and move files backwards and forwards from the SAM. This is so that I can use the A1200 floppy drive for reading and writing adf files. I do own a Catweasel MK4 but the case I have the SAM in isn't big enough to accomodate it, or a floppy drive for that matter. Besides I still want to use the A1200 for old stuff, e-uae isn't quite the same!
Thanks,
Rudi.

The 040 has a 32bit address space and so no problems... the EC020 only has a 24bit address space.

Yes they came with the package but they unfortunately don't help. I think it's because the trapdoor memory expansion maps its ram into the same address space as the pcmcia slot (or something like that). I forgot this when ordering the EasyNet package. I expect the ram on your card is mapped outside the usual address space because you have an 040.

Rudi.

That's what I meant to say :-)

That's correct. Some accelerator cards map into the Zorro2 memory address space and, as such, cannot access the Zorro3 address space.

That did occur to me but would you believe it I sent the only 4mb simm I had to Japan the other week to a guy who wanted it because the 8mb simm on the Viper 030 I sold him blocked the pcmcia port! It was only later I realised my very stupid mistake
Maybe I can get him to send it back as it doesn't work with the viper anyway.
Thanks,
Rudi.

So does all this mean that your signature is wrong now?
A1200 +8mb Fast

How about this updated sig?

Most A1200 RAM expansion cards have jumpers to change from 8MB SIMMs to 4MB- so you shouldn't need to change SIMMs

I had a quick play with the jumpers the other night but all I got was a yellow screen on boot up. The jumpers are a little strange on this expansion, may be I got them wrong. I presumed because it didn't work the jumpers must be for the size simm installed not how much memory is required. I will try again.
Thanks,
Rudi.

Hi Rudi,
I understand your problem, thanks for sending me the 4mb simms if you want me to send them back to you I would be happy to do so, for some reason my Viper doesn`t accept them instead they show up as 19 mb lol maybe i was a bit too creative with the jumper settings. Does anyone have any 4mb simms that definitely work with a Viper as then I will send the other 4mb simms back to Rudi.
-
Hi Timo,
How did you end up with 19mb? :-o
It did occur to me that one of those simms I sent you might have been a 16mb rather than a 4mb.
I'm going to play around with the jumpers a bit more see if I can cut the memory down that way. Otherwise I might have to take you up on your offer to post the simms back to me :-).
Or I might just give up on the idea and try something else!
Cheers,
Rudi.

hmmm, i tried a base unexpanded a1200 with an amigakit wifi card and easynet and i have just about a meg left? just enough to mount a PC shared drive over SMBFS and copy files with... can't do alot else, but it works...
not sure whats going on. are you using a VGA screen mode with lots of colours? anything in wbstartup?

When I realised memory was short I cleared out wbstartup (only magic menu in there anyway) and cut the screenmode back to 4 colours high-res. Hmmm I will have to delve deeper as it seems strange that you have about a meg and i've only got ~half-three quarters at most.

Rudi.

Hiya Rudi,
Yeah sure you can have the 2 simms back :) sadly the 4mb is just not recognised no matter what i do :boohoo: i think i will have to buy some simms somewhere else ... maybe amiga kit?

Luckily changing the jumpers has done the trick after all! Thanks Amigakit for making me take a second look and thanks Timo for offering to send the simms :-)
The A1200 is now all sorted, just got something strange going on with the SAM. The SAM can ping other machines and the router on the network but can't be pinged by any of them. I can mount shares fine with smbfs on the SAM but the pc and A1200 can't seem to see it at all even though the SAM can access them. I keep checking through the obvious things like checking workgroup names and ips match. Everything seems to be ok but I must be missing something. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,
Rudi.
