Title: Whose dog ate OS5?
Post by: orb85750 on November 28, 2008, 06:51:30 AM
According to the interview of Amiga Inc in October 2007, it was "ahead of schedule."  Maybe we'll all be shocked when, one random day in 2009, Amiga Inc announces its release.

------
17) Could you give us some information, tell us about some of the features, and what the current status of OS5 is?

OS 5 is ahead of schedule, and we will be making public announcements concerning the product in the 4th quarter of this year.

OS5 was going to be the integration of Amiga Anywhere and OS4.  The dogs are currently doing battle in court to see which one gets to eat it.

Don't hold your breath waiting for it.  Blue doesn't suit you.

OS5 was a press release, nothing more.  Supposedly related to Tao Intent (Amiga Anywhere), it was not to be.  Remeber the press release comes from the same source that claimed to have turned down a deal bigger than iPhone....

I did not realize that OS5 was dependent on OS4.  I thought it was going to be the alternative to OS4 if Amiga Inc. lost the never-ending lawsuit.  Either that, or they expected the lawsuit to be done with about a year ago, according to the interview.  -Dave

I agree with HammerD on this one.

cheers.

:)

Long Live hyperion and Acube, keep building better boards guys, and hyperion will crunch up os4.2 perhaps??

@ Gebrochen

Very true, very true. We as a amiga community have learnt not to trust anything A.inc says.

As for those better boards, we cant jump too far yet, not until the outcome of the court case in january anyway. If hyperion does the same thing they did last court case, then yeah, os4.2 might be a possibility. And Acube may build 1ghz or 1.5ghz amigas?

Amiga OS 5 has been out for a while.  I believe it runs one program.  Space Invaders as seen at CES.

No, I'm not kidding.

A little history of AmigaOS5.

From MACNN.com Amiga: OS5 better than Mac OS X (http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/10/08/amiga.ceo.on.os5.mac.os.x/)

Amiga CEO Bill McEwen has declared that his company's
OS5 will be better than Mac OS X,
insisting that the
forthcoming operating system has much to offer while
refusing to give any details. Amiga's OS5 is well underway,
according to McEwen, who promised to serve up a
press release before the end of 2007 offering details on Amiga's
secret project. "Details for OS 5 will be made
public in the fourth quarter of 2007, and then you will
have a much clearer understanding and I will let you
decide if what I know to be true is accurate," the
 executive said.
OS5 is said to scale to its host hardware,
allowing the system software to run on anything from
mobile phones to consoles and servers. Amiga is currently
fighting a legal battle over OS4, but McEwen said OS5 is
ahead of schedule as he reiterated forthcoming
announcements in the fourth quarter of this year.

Then later the next YEAR at CES:

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/07/ces_amiga_os_5_surfaces/ (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/07/ces_amiga_os_5_surfaces/)

Amiga – the company – was ostensibly showing AmigaAnywhere 2, the new version
of its virtual machine technology. But taking Amiga President Bill McEwen aside for a
moment, we discovered that AmigaAnywhere 2 is AmigaOS 5.

"We had to call it that because of the Microsoft deal,” McEwen whispered. Amiga's had
close-ish ties with Redmond since 2002 at least when it began pitching the original
AmigaAnywhere for Windows CE.

So the only thing ever seen running on AOS5 is a clone or Space Invaders.  No gui nothing, just a straight port, and the claim that AA2/OS5 was running there underneath... Can you say M.A.M.E. anybody??

He said he'd let us decide what is clear and accurate.... so is AA2 -ie AOS5 "better" than OSX?   I think I decided... decided to scrape something off my shoe and and mail it to Amiga Inc.

Reading shet like that shets me to tears. What an Ahole.

That guy is a tosser, why the fuk would you assume that as amigans would want that shet product, when we can have a stand alone Amiga OS on its own hardware.

Man, I love my sam440ep to tears, along with the fact that I am running Amiga OS NATIVELY.

I dont want another emulator, for fuks sake, get it off the market Bill, and let Cloanto continue its fine product.

My 2 cents of rage worth.

Cheers. :pissed:

@Gebrochen

It's not an emulator. You may recall they said straight port. It's just some virtual machine CPU box optimised for x86. The VPU is little endian. It's Bill Mc's dream, for some reason he wanted to slap the Amiga name onto it. Even though the Amiga name was a joke by the time he cane about he still wanted to use it. Go figure? :-?

Rob:

So Bill, how do you get a community of several thousand computer users.

Bill Mcewen:

Well you start off with a community of tens of thousands of computer users.

In a years time, Amiga inc has succeeded in getting listed in an American phone games catalogue and developing a creepy Snowman maker.  Nice, except that

a) I'm not in America and
b) I live in the subtropics where *any* snowman is probably creepy and
c) I use an iPhone and Amiga Inc is a Windows shop.

Ah, lest I forget, they also created a tip calculator too (which is useless as I live in a country that doesn't tip).  The code must be from an intro to VB textbook since it's three formulae on an otherwise blank screen.

Does anyone honestly expect an OS out of these people?  The only products they produce are using TAOS Intent.

I do since you can always outsource your brains to some other company, then sell (or at least release) the product branded as yourself.

Say, did the Amiga Inc. make ANY of its software products entirely themselves?

OS 5 will ship the sametime Duke Nukem Forever will. . . NEVER! Both are figments of the respective developers imaginations.

Hopefully the poor economy will put Amiga, Inc. out of business like the superfluous third nipple it is.

Wow - he really oversells it doesn't he. I don't even know of anyone who has released a product for it other than the two games promoted on his site.

I look to Europe of any innovation on the Amiga front!
