Title: Very stupid AmiKIT question...
Post by: Fingers on November 24, 2008, 02:35:47 AM
Ok, I read the FAQ & Features listings on the AmiKIT site, but my answer was not there.

I don't want to register on the AmiKIT forum just to ask this silly little question, so I'm asking it here since there seem to be a lot of AmiKIT users on this board.

Once installed, does AmiKIT start up on boot? That is, I turn on the PC & once Windows is booted I'm already within the AmiKIT environment (no seeing Winblows at all)?

PZ.

Ok then, so what is worthwhile about using it as opposed to just using WinUAE?

Is it just a pre-compiled Workbench installation/application collection with WinUAE included as the emulation base?

Its a pre-compiled workbench 3.9 environment with a copy of Opus Magellan installed that runs under Winae with ALOT of additions that would take you a very long time to install, comfigure and get working properly.  Its billed as "high end Amiga environment.  It can ran on a real Amiga but you will need a 40 mhz 68040 as a minimum with a graphics card to use well.

Well in that case I am less interested now than I was couple of hours ago.

I thought maybe my dream emulation environment had arrived...one which presents itself immediately upon windows booting up.

perhaps there's something to set inside winuae so that it loads on bootup? if not then perhaps you can type some codes into the msconfig or config.sys or command.com or whatever?

You can simply add it as a startup item and it will start up automatically.

You can also have WinUAE replace EXPLORER.EXE as the Windows shell, but I don't recommend that.

How do I do that? (I'm even worse with PCs than Amigas )

That sounds GREAT!!!! How do I do THAT? Why don't you recommend it? Becuase if you want to change Windows settings you no longer can?

Try this procedure (http://amikit.amiga.sk/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=3&topic=329) and your PC should boot into AmiKit directly.

Or, if you want to keep Explorer just use the command line and configuration provided by AmiKit in a new shortcut and drop it in your Startup folder (%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup).
