Title: Help accessing files on old passworded Win XP hard drive
Post by: RMK305 on November 19, 2008, 11:49:55 PM
Hi,

The motherboard of my PC died and as a result ended up getting a whole new machine. I had a backup of most of my files but there was stuff that was not backed up in time before it died. I have conected the drive up to the new machine and it recognised it just fine. However, as the files were under a passworded user account for logging in to XP I am unable to oper the folder to view and copy them over. I get a message telling me that the folder is not accessable and that access is denied.

I tried boting the HD from the new machine but as it's setup for another motherboard it doesn't go very far.

How do I get round this to view and copy my data?

Thanks,

Robert

try this:
at the disk, right click, properties and then go /security/advanced/owner/
there change the ownership to the new administrator.
if you have xp home it may not work.

Damn. I have the Home edition and there isn't that option.

Any other ideas?

I have used this (http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/) administrator password remover many times with great success. Once you run it you will then be able to login as administrator with no password. This will give you access to all other user directories and files.

UPDATE - okay, I just reread your post and think maybe that what I have suggested may not work. Why not just try and reinstall XP on that drive? It should keep all of the other user information intact and then you can login as administrator and access the files. Maybe even booting your system with a DOS bootdisk might work. Try
this (http://www.bootdisk.com/) site - many useful tools.

Ah,,, xphome uses simple file sharing, you can turn it off in pro but not home.. but apparently if you boot in safe mode and login to the administrator account you can get security tab in folder properties.

so safe mode, admin account,
find folder you want to change owner on, change to everyone. This has to be ntfs filesystem though..

hope this works..
