Hi.
I was wondering how many of you are still using AmigaOS 3.x (Preferably 3.9) as their main OS, or boot from their 3.x partition at least twice a week.
Please reply only if you use it for purposes other than just gaming. :-)
-
I'm using AmigaOS 3.9 right now. That's what I use >90% of the time when I'm at home.
However, I just ordered a Sam + OS4.1 from AmigaKit yesterday. So my 3.9 days might soon see an end. :)
-
Most recently used and most often used "Amiga" here is Amiga Forever which is 3.X per Cloanto.
Less often used real Amigas have 3.1 on the 1200/030/50 and 3.5 on the 2000/060 with Cds not yet used to go 3.9.
Can't do 4.0 until get a PPC.
-
I use 3.1 on my stock (non accelerated) A2000 every day. I am hoping to get an Accelerator soon and make the jump to 3.9. Amigakit.comm is out of 3.9 right now anyways.
-
@All
True revival of OS3.9 is expected when Natami hits the market.....
So we should not write it off...
-
I use OS 3.9 on my A1200T 060 32MB all the time.
-
I'm using AmigaOS 3.9 as my main OS. I also use MorphOS quite frequently. Both running on an Amiga 1200.
-
I use 3.9 on an *almost daily* basis...
I even have a 3.1 partition to boot from, just for the
odd app/game.
That's what I run on my desktop A1200-030.
-
I don't use any of my Amigas as my maincomputer, but all of them use either 3.9 (1200 & 2000) or 3.1 (3000). Works well and they get to be used quite regularly.
-
Yep! OS3.9 being used by the main machine in my avatar :-)
Also using OS3.1 & WarpOS in A4000/PPC and have OS3.0 in A1200 Desktops.
:pint:

@Voyager74
There are no game incompatibilities with AOS 3.9 to my knowledge. As for Apps/utils, i can only think of ARQ. Visage still works, but it has to be started from CLI or something. I read that ImageFX had some minor problems but they have been fixed, iirc.
@A4000_Mad
Why do you use OS3.0 on your A1200s? :-)

I do have an A1200 Desktop with OS3.9 but my first 1200's with 170MB and 800MB HDD's are still on 3.0. It's nice to switch them on and see what I was up to back then. I don't particularly like 3.0 but it's part of my Amiga history and will be staying in them :-)
-
the Amiga University A2000/68060-50 webserver still uses AOS 3.1, 24-7 since about March 2000.....take THAT, Gill Bates! :)

@A4000_Mad
Oh, Ok. I see.
@amigau
That's nice! I like your attitude.. and your website, btw.
-
I have used 3.9 a few times this week.
-
Got 3.9 on both the A3k and A4k. Gaming a couple times a week, but mostly for drawing, 3D, and animations, sometimes for inclusion in YouTube videos.
-
Last weeks I've been using OS3.x at least a pair of times. OS3.9 shares his time with OS4 / MorphOS :-)
-
I'm using 3.9 on my A1200 very often. Now with 4.1.
-
Hi,
My Elbox Towered A4K/Mediator/CyberstormMKII/060/SCSI/Voodoo as my main system running AOS 3.9 for Mail, Chat and Browsing.
My EyeTech Towered A1200/Blizzard/1240/40/SCSI/CD ROM/ZIP100/ Epson C64 Printer and Mustek 600 (Scanquix) AOS 3.9 for DTP etc.
My A1200/Blizzard/1260 SD/FF for Broadband back-up Mail, Chat and Browsing.
My WiFi A1200/JawsMKII/8 Meg fast RAM AOS 3.1 for Chat and E-Mail. Normally run in my living room on the telly.
My Desktop A4000/Apollo/4040 Picasso IV also runs AOS 3.9 and is my WHDLoad system as well as my back-up on Dial-Up
if the Broadband goes down.
My CD32 SX1 for gaming.
My CD32SXPro still to be finished.
Regards, Michael

I am using AOS3.9 with Dopus 5.82 as main OS on my Amigas.
-
Versions of 3.x are all I'm using on my Amiga's...
-
@AmigaMance :)
I agree, most old apps work under OS3.9.
(Visage, DaemonTools etc.) with some patches.
I use DOpus as a desktop on one partition.
But having 3 boot-partitions like me, some ends up heavily patched, and with lots of graphical eyecandy.
Therefore, I have a clean 3.1Wb with no patches or haxx.
It has loads of chipmem left, and it boots like greased lightning :p
Functionality above all.
-
Yes through WinUAE, if only to run OctaMED right now...
-
I only use OS 3.0 / 3.1 on my machines.
mostly used for 3D Art.
-
I use 3.9 on all of my Amiga's with my current most used model being my A3000T with 060@66, Delfina, PIV, etc.
Dan :-)
-
I'm not using 3.x since years, when I switched to 4.0 and now 4.1.

You knew I was going to reply to this thread...
I use 3.1 DAILY. Word processing, email, internet.. desktop publishing, streaming MP3s etc.. I don't do a lot of art these days... but it's rock steady when you build a good foundation and have all the correct patches.. oh and 128mb of ram helps too i'm sure..
-
I use my extremely upgraded A1200 when my gf sits too tightly at Pegasos. Mostly for internet stuff and music. And seasonally I use that A1200 daily when I get inspiration to code something (as I target my programs to run on classic hw and I'll have to see the real speed and AGA compatibility etc). It has OS3.9 and Magellan2 as Workbench replacement.
Gaming wasn't asked, but my other A1200 (030) has 3.9 too and we play with it weekly :)
-
Yeah, AmigaOs3.9 is my default system on all my classic amigas and I use them every day. (A1200/A4000)
I have also Mos/Os4.0 Classic but I don't use this systems very much. (only for testing some stuff)
Os3.9 still rulez with 2000+ sweet games and programs!!!!
Oh, when will be Natami finished, I can't wait any more?!?! ;-)

I use 3.9.
It runs 24 hours a day 365 a year as I host several websites on it. Think I have 3 domain names pointed to it. Gotta love hserv!!
-
I use OS 3.9 +powerup.
I have only A1200
Mediator 4xpci
blizzardpc 040/210
-
Mostly use 4.1 now but do use 3.9 from time to time.
Have a TV card in a Mediator which I use for importing stuff from a digicam.
-
I'm glad to see that there are people who actively use the classic AmigaOS like myself! It is as lightweight as an OS can be. It's fast and responsive even on slow CPUs and, if heavily patched, quite usable and fun to use.
At the same time though, i feel sad that when i look at the current status of the classic scene, i see an almost dead body. I'm not talking about the development of the OS itself of course, i'm talking about the drop of support from developers who are still around but decided to go OS4/MOS/AROS, exclusively.
I understand that things need to move on etc, etc, but do you think that AOS3.x deserved to die in favour of these NG OSes or that it deserves to be supported in parallel to those with backports (see AFA_OS) and simultaneous 68k builds? (see Jahc and a few others that i don't recall their names right now) Yes, i do know that the second is not always possible due to missing or outdated OS components.
A rather rhetorical question for this thread. I know...
-
I'm still using OS 3.1 with Scalos 1.2d on my a1200 and a2000 and OS 3.9 on my a3000T.
-
I use OS3.9 on my main computer, for internet, chat, games, mp3, burning cd's, and so on.
I look forward to owning a SAM with AOS4.1, but I'll keep my other miggys :-)
Of course I have a peecee, mostly because my webbank needs windoze, and for some websites that IBrowse can't handle.

You might want to review the links on your site, most of the ones I clicked were 404.
-
I have to say that i dont use my A1200 with OS3.9 so much anymore, and the reason is that i now use my minimig for retro gaming and i try to do all the rest with my SAM and OS4.1
-
Well, if this works, I have just got my OS3.5 A1200 online after 8
years :pint:
-
OS 3.5 on A4000D!
No Games!
(games only on my A500 with OS 2.1)
-

Congrats as it has worked Homer :pint:
I've only just got Broadband myself and have used something called an ethernet lead for the first time ever  :-D
-
Yeah, I'll fire up an old 3000 or UAE quite often to play an old game that's familiar. It's comfort food for the mind. But as a "main machine?" Nope, this is 2008 not 1988...
-
I use only 3.9 on my new (old stock) A1200 from AmigaKit and it gets used for gaming and game development.
I'm still trying to configure/patch it to my liking but it's getting there :-D
Would love to get a SAM but not enough $$$ in the piggy :-(
-
yes, acknowledged - I am trying to allocate some time to revisit that and add new ones too - thanks for the reminder...

Happily using OS 3.5 for my gaming (WHDLoad!) and music making er make that hacking :-D
-
I'm using my A4000/060 3.9BB2 as my main OS everyday
Used to run OS4.0 on my A1 but that crappy HW died so back to real AMIGA's :-D
-
I use 3.9 on RTG machines everyday, 3.1 on AGA, and 2.1 with unexpanded original graphics Amigas.
-
Since I got a problem with my SCSI HD (http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=24894&forum=14&start=180&viewmode=flat&order=0#418577), I stuck with 3.9 as main OS (top boot priority), and I switch to OS4 now and then.
-
Still using my A1200 '060, 192mb fast here. Planning on mediator/tower/wireless sega controllers/wireless mouse/keyboard, 24bit gfx, etc yet. Then I'll think about os4 and sam, though I'm guessing my 1200 will still be a primary.
-
I'm using 3.9 almost daily for email (YAM). I also use it for image processing/editing (Image FX), midi sequencing and sound recording (Bars&Pipes with Sunrize AD516) and text editing (Cygnus Ed)
I wish I could afford to upgrade my A3k to a 060 or PPC
-
I am now a happy 3.9 user again :-)
I am trying to get hold of a PPC and hope to upgrade to OS 4 Classic in the future
-
I use 3.9 on my 1200 desktop, and I also use 3.1 on the same machine, depends on which hard drive I use.
-
Using AmigaOS 3.9 a couple of times a week. Hardware is 68060@80MHz CSMK3 with Mediator Voodoo4/Fast Ethernet which is fast enough for 90+% of uses. I would use it more if I had a good browser and it was a little more stable. Funnest machine I have and still useful. I'll probably get an AmigaOS 4.x or Natami sometime next year.
-
I do.
My main computer at home is my fully developed Amiga 4000 with CyberstormPPC, Mediator PCI Busboard, Voodoo4, Terratec 512i digital, 10/100mBit NIC, Spider II USB 2.0, 160 gB HD, DVD-RW, etc. pp.
The main OS on this machine currently still is OS 3.9, although I already have OS 4.0 classic installed as well.
Unfortunately I currently don't have enough spare time to set up the 4.0 system properly.
Aside from that I want to give PPC-Linux a go on that machine once I have the spare time for that.
My A4kPPC is mainly used for webbrowsing, e-mails, photo editing (and storing), (light) video editing (and storing)and CAE/CAD/CAM, networking.
The a4k is networked with an XPpro-PC, which is sitting under the desktop - remote controlled by the Amiga via "RDesktop" by Darren Eveland.
If the Amiga's power is not sufficiant for a particular job or if a piece of software is needed to do this job, that is not available on the Amiga platform, I send the task to the PC over the network, do the necessary steps there, transfer the result back to my Miggy and continue to work on the task there.
"RDesktop" is a wonderful tool for that - no need for a second monitor, keyboard or mouse...
If my Miggy is used once in a year for gaming that really is a lot (although I have loads of games rotting in my disk boxes - mostly from second hand buys).
-
I do.
For a quick look over my favourite websites, for emailing and chatting whenever I feel booting the peecee is too much effort.
-
Most of my "amiga-ish time" is spent with either Pegasos 2 with MorphOS 2.1 or CD32, booting games directly from disks.
I have still my old 3.9 installation on my A1200, but I have thought of doing a clean-ish 3.1 installation on my A1200 some day, maybe one day if I replace my HD :-)
-
I'm still using OS3.9 on my A1200, mainly for chatting with friends on IRC and MSN, reading mail, listening to mp3's, mods, sids, streams, and chilling with finetuning the system. However it's not my main system anymore, I turn it on few times a week. But I use a CD32 daily for playing.
-
Using Workbench 3.9 and happy. I keep in my mind that Amiga is a hobby. Hobby for more than 17 years. Good games and SO. But for daily computer use the best is PC. This is necessary because I saw many Amiga hardcore users that some today look the PC in another way and stopped of using Amiga. For me OS4.0 and another OSs are for non Amiga classic uses.

yup, 3.x here, guilty as charged. usually one machine gets fired up daily.
if its not for gaming purposes, then mainly...
A1200/030 3.1 ,fblit, ftext, multicx.
gets used for amiga.org'ing, aminet downloads, ADF extractions, pixel painting and mod playing.
A1200/PPC 3.9 BB1 (BB2 crashes?)
gets used for fusion mac emulation - for nutscrape communicrasher, 3D rendering in real3d, (and games)
i think i'm going to be amiga till i die. :-D
-
I too use my Amiga OS3.9 (BB2) PPC 240/060-50 1200 tower as much as I can for all my browsing and computer use. I just wish that IBrowse was more able to handle current webpages better, and still hope it will be updated soon. I use the Amiga for scanning, DTP, graphics, and anything else I can of use to me.
I wish there was better support for USB as I have a Mediator card, and I was extremely disappointed that Chris Hodges abandoned Poseidon for people who had bought Spider cards in preference to Subway or other E3B cards. I bought my Spider card very early on, before the Elbox debacle, and so felt it was unfair there is no longer any support for the card, which up until the Deneb was the only card with USB2 feature.
I won't go along the OS4.1 road at the moment as I bought OS4 and feel abandoned by Hyperion & ACube as they have not supported that version as they should, seeing as it cost £60+. 1 update before abandonment is a disgrace. Besides which, I do not see enough quality software available for it as yet, and the cost is extortionate for what you get.
So it's OS3.9 for me, still the best Amiga release for Classic hardware.
-
I use my Amiga with 3.9 almost every day. Mostly C++ coding (for fun), sound sampling and editing (for fun), and messing around with photos I've taken (also for fun). In addition I surf places like a.org and other sites that are usable with IBrowse. Every once in a while I also fire up a game.
-
I use OS3.9 on an Amithlon setup on an old Dell PC (PIII-1000, 512MB RAM). I use it for RDesktop, AWeb, TurboCalc mostly.
-
I use OS 3.1 on my A530 equipped A500. That should do the job for basic operations and of course, some WHDLoad-ing.
