Post by: jahc on November 09, 2008, 02:54:24 AM
Post here if you've got a Sam, or if you've got one on order!

I'm hoping to see some new names on the forums :)

I made a Pre-order on OS4.1 as soon as it was possible, but at that time i thought that i would get my sam later (maybe next year).
then after a week or two i decided to get the Sam too, and the only one that had them in stock at that time was Vesalia.

Where did your order yours from?

I'm waiting an order placed directly to ACube some time ago, it's a full system composed by SAM440ep 667 + HD80G + DVDRW + OS4.1 + Case GA630iBK.
I can't wait anymore!

Well, I've got one with 4.1 from Amigakit.

I've got one with OS4.1 from Vesalia.  I like it a lot but wish it had a bit more cpu power & video ram.  Has anyone else found the usb2 slow?  It performs more like usb1.1 on my machine.

Cheers,
Rudi.

Got 4.1 and Sam from Amigakit.

USB seems fine here.

A USB pen I had did take forever to transfer files intially.
But had been used in a windoze machine with dodgy USB.
It appeared to be slower to what I was used on several different machines

Formatted it again to FAT 32, and that speeded it back up again.

Does OS4 support EHCI/USB2 now? Didn't know that...

Amiga OS 4 doesn't support USB 2.0 yet, so you're stuck with USB 1.1 speeds for now. :-( However, USB 2.0 drivers are coming.

Ok that explains it!  I should have paid more attention when I read the os4.1 feature list.  Glad it's just my ignorance and not the way I've set my machine up or something.

Cheers,
Rudi.

You're very welcome, great service as ever.

I'm after a few more bits and pieces from you, so you can expect an order from me soon.

Cheers

I have a sam + OS4.1 on order from Amigakit.

Hopefully I should take delivery of it to play with by the end of the month.

Plus with a bit of luck it will fit in one of my existing mini-itx cases.

@ Allanon:

I also placed my order ASAP as soon as I heard the news.

I have only ever owned an A1000 up until now. But have consistantly been using A1200 also from my colleague, that one could virtually consider it like my machine.

I just recieved sam440ep and os4.1 this week, and so far, havent been too disappointed. I got the Nexus case.

Be careful though, when you get your complete system, let me know how many days your PSU lasted before you needed(still have to this sunday) to replace it.

I am currently using the SAM440ep without dvd rom support because of this little incident. Using a spare psu from another x86 machine with no sata connectors. I managed to use a ide to sata cable to atleast run the HD.

I have also been wanting to obtain hollywood3, but they are out of stock atm, so Ive sent them an email to find out whats happening.

My next step is to buy imagine to do some after hour CAD as well, in a different field then my daily career CAD which is using Microstation for construction.

One thing I already find amazing is, everybody seems to have problems with their screens, but I dont have any. I found, once I turned off the new feature of opacity through the windows, that I can do everything, drag, drop, have 20 windows open at once, etc, etc.

I find it ironic, how, this is the first time in reality, since my farthers death(he used to take care of these things when I was a kid) that I am using an Amiga with hard drive, network, usb, printer, etc, etc, and I am actually more calm then when I was doing the same in windows.

Another thing I found amusing, I bought a USB hub, 4 port, for use on my sam, but at the time waiting for my system, used it on xp, and xp didnt except it, but yet, it was made for xp and mac. hahahahahahaha.

Yet another notch for the Amiga system.

Basically, I am very pleased, this is all new to me, and I have a lot of shell scripting to learn. I also need to learn how to use Arexx and other things, so I can use the CAD more effectively.

I am so far, despite some challenges, a lot happier with this OS, than the multitude of others I have tried, that I can only imagine that I wouldve also been happy with a peg and MOS.

I believe it is because I grew up with the A1000 with 1.3, that I am actually feeling like I once did, with the minor exception that I am now doing more than just gameing.

I Really like my new system, I can see myself using it as a daily system, and not touching the other systems much anymore, as it fulfills my needs atm in my current walks of life.

I think it wil only be a thing with Gothic IV and elder scrolls V that would get me going on PC again for a while after hours.

Naturally at working hours, I will be using xp, like usual.

Cheers

 8-)

Sorry for long post.

How much would it cost to send a SAM downunder? :)

Shipping cost for a SAM440ep (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=840) and AmigaOS 4.1 (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=839) would be around AUD $40.  Hope this helps.

That's not so bad, I will be putting in an order shortly. What would the price in total be for a board + case + os4.1 in AUD? Would it come with a hardrive or does it make sense to get that locally. It couldn't be more than buying an A4000 + Picasso 4 which i have given up on ebay.

Ja Wohl, Welcome to Ze sam440ep Klub.

haha.

Its amusing to me, I accidentally been using my sam440ep for most ofthe day today, and have had to only restart once due to user error.

Man, cant wait until I hopefully get the new psu so I can also put the nexus case back together and have dvd rw support. Man, I couldve played earth 2140 already.

Or played something via LAN with a few amiga people and their A1's.

Cheers  :-D

(Still smiling and happy I spent the INSANE price)

Unless you want to write 68K software for the classic Amiga, download the Amiga OS 4.x SDK (http://ftp://ftp.hyperion-entertainment.biz/AmigaOS4_SDK/), and use GCC. If you don't want to create makefiles, buying CubicIDE will give you a proper IDE that will create the makefiles for you. There is someone working on an OS4 native IDE, but it's not released yet.

Hi Hans

CubicIDE is a nice software, but does it work under OS4.1??

@ Andeda;

Why not just get Hollywood 4 (out soon)?

I am going to get the Upgraded and newest Hollywood from Andreas, so I can create some games, software, etc to start off with, while in the meantime getting used to the idea of creating 3D CAd insteadt of Contruction CAD!

Cheers. :-D

(Courtesy of SAM440EP and Amiga OS4.1 only) hahaha

EDIT:
By the way, managed to find a different sized psu that fitted into the nexus case today at the swap meet.

Then Merv, Damo and myself went to the local amigameet to show off the SAM.

This is where I played six games at once, while running other programs, just for fun. the CPU meter went nutz on my docky today!!

Vesalia got out of SAMs, else I would consider purchasing full set with silent case and AmigaOS. I have microAmigaOne, but the SAM is newer hardware and silent, and it can come very handy as a video player in my bedroom, because it is small in size.

What i have heard is that it cant be installed directly on a OS4.1 installation?
you should install it on OS4 first then update to OS4.1?? if this is the case then it is not possible to use it on a SAM with OS4.1  :-?

Oh, I didn't know that. I simply carried it over from my OS 4.0 install. In that case, you may have to put up with using a plain text editor until the OS4.x native IDE comes out.
