Title: Manual protection
Post by: motorollin on November 08, 2008, 11:50:24 AM
Is there an Amiga games database anywhere which gives details of whether or not games have manual protection? I have checked HOL and LemonAmiga, but neither of these sites seem to contain this information.

Motorolin: be careful asking those types of questions around here. I'm sure Fatboy's already on the phone to FAST naming you as a potential terrorist, erm...I mean software pirate!

Thanks, but I want to check whether they have it, not remove it.

I don't see why. I've got a load of boxed, original games here, some of which don't have manuals. I want to check whether the manual is required to play each of them, since installing with WHDLoad usually removes the manual check anyway.

motor: I remember WHDLoad installing Robocop3D from my original copy a while back. That was heavily manual protected and, you're right, WHDLoad pretty much stripped the protection. All that was required was to hit return on the prtection requests (no manual needed).

I think that's pretty much how it goes for all WHDLoad installed stuff

Yep, but I want to make sure the games are usable without the manual when running from floppy in case the person who (hopefully) buys them doesn't want to use WHDLoad.

100% agree with Moto on this one! Like himself I have hundreds of boxed games and very little of them have manuals and its only when you try to play them you find out. :madashell:

Exactly. I know that I personally would be extremely annoyed to receive a game only to find out that it needs a manual which is not present in order to play it. I don't want to start the game up and just see if the game starts without asking for manual protection, as some games (e.g. Exile) don't ask you until later on in the game. So I'm looking for a database which will tell me whether or not the game requires a manual to get past the protection.

I don't think its a big deal. whoever is buying them should just take the risk. I mean, he probably has cracked/whdload version anyway and would use original as a collector (keep it on shelf in order not to wear it out).
IMO, all you should do is inform him he won't get the manual..
