Hi all,
I'm sure this is a simple one, but I can't seem to find an answer online...
Does the standard internal IDE interface in the A1200 support two device? In other words, can I use a dual-connector IDE cable to connect two devices (in my case a 2.5" HDD and CF card adaptor) without the need for an IDEFix, or similar, interface?

yes, many people have used both CDROM and HDD at once with standard IDE.
the problem is that some CF adapters or card don't work in such situations, IIRC.

As far as I'm aware the answer is yes.
For your information - An IDE buffer card will allow you to connect 4 devices. 2 on each channel.
Some people have reported problems with using a CF card adaptor not allowing them to connect another device on the same ribbon cable.

I'm Not sure but keep in mind that the standard interface isn't buffered or terminated so it's prob not such a good idea anyway.
There are some cheap interface solutions available from AmigaKit.

well, I can't say about CF cards, as I haven't used them. But I can say that I have had HDD and CDROM's on both my 4000's and my 1200T, with no buffered IDE interface for years with no problems. (apart from an IBM DeathStar drive failing on me :-x ) Have heard conficting reports from people about buffered interfaces being needed..
But termination? Thought that only SCSI needs termination, or am I mistaken (as I often am :lol: )

Yes, you are mistaken.
IDE is a reduced SCSI interface (in the beginning of the design). But it needs only termination on the controller side (a pair of chips, actually), since it always expect two devices, at maximum.

Many thanks for the info!
When I had my old A1200 I also had a 4-way buffered interface, but I only ever used an internal HDD and an external CD-ROM.
So it looks like I didn't need it after all!
This time I was planning to use a CF card along with the internal HDD, but if there are conflicts I might have to ditch the internal HDD...
