Title: Possible quick fix for corrupt profiles in Win2k
Post by: Vincent on August 28, 2003, 11:42:28 PM
After booting my Win2k box just now I couldn't log on because my profile was corrupt.  Only Windows knows why - everything was shut down ok, but hey, it's Windows :-P

Here's what I did:

Go into Control Panel - Users

Change the name of the corrupt profile (originally called Vincent) to something like VincentCorrupt.

Make a new profile with the old name (Vincent).

Log off, then log in as the newly created account (Vincent).

Log out and you should be able to log in as the old one (VincentCorrupt).

If this works, go back into Control Panel - Users and delete the new one (Vincent).  Now rename the original one (VincentCorrupt) to it's old name (Vincent).

You should still be able to log in as normal now.

It's a bit weird, but it has just worked for me - honest :-)

Or you could just give up and use another OS ;-)

Almost Similar incident (corrupted usr files) happened to me with my
win2k  machine just couple days ago. In log therer was mention that
it will try to boot from backups nect time.. and it did.

In the end.. I did not find any virus or other thingies.. But who
knows for sure. Makes me a bit worried to see others havign allmost
same problems at the same time.

Weird - I've never had to deal with a corrupt profile on NTx before.  IIRC one person I know has had to, but that's about it.

If you can confirm that method of resolution definitely works 100%, I'll post it on the technical reference on my website.

I'll let you know the next time I need to try it :-)

It doesn't happen often - maybe once every 5 months or more.  And I don't really want to try and corrupt it on purpose ;-)

I guess it was more good luck, as most of the times you need to "rebuild" the profile (delete ntuser.dat for instance) or just start over and try to salvage what's left of the old profile (like mail)..

Then again, I mostly deal with domain user accounts, not local accounts..
