Title: Windows 98 Virus - Off Topic
Post by: Linchpin on August 28, 2003, 07:07:47 PM
Anyone know of any new/old virus flying around infecting windows 9x operating systems? Symptoms i can see are :-

Maxing out internet connection ( Can tell due to lights on broadband modem continually indicating internet traffic flowing in and out, nothing showing on firewall tho).
Blocking other programs from connecting.
Seems to bypass AV and Firewalls
Firewall on "Block All" dosent do anothing.
Nothing apparent in MSCONFIG or to be seen when running CTRL - ALT - DEL.

sorry i dont know any more about this at the moment, i dont use windows but where i work we deal with this sort of system and as much info as i can dig out would be appriciated.

Cheers community :-)

What ? No virus scanner ?

Otherwise check www.symantec.com or other antivirus site, perhas you can find some related info there..

Sorry no further help, the symptons are a bit to generic and could also point to a hardware or line/network problem

What do you mean "nothing showing on the firewall"? No programs at all, or just the usual  browser etc ?

I had to sort out a friends machine the other week, she couldn`t send mail. Turned out that she`d got the Bugbear virus, which infected Outlook Express, and shut down ZoneAlarm everytime it started.

Do you get anything from doing Netstat -a at a DOS prompt (with no apps open) ?
It isn`t either of those 2 worms going about, cos 98 is immune to that.
Also, don`t trust the list of apps that comes up from a Ctrl-Alt-Del, as it`s soooo easy to hide an app from that list!

Apparently, nothing detects this yet. Remember, this isnt my pc in trying to fix. Im limited on what i can / cannot download (Infact, this virus prevents all outgoing / inconming traffic), so i cannto download anything. I just want some info, ie virus name type etc.

Got it... The damn thing started when I was testing a REBOL e-mail script, and I spent a good hour trying to find the bug when there wasn't one... Grrr... :-)

I'm on a "only Amiga" broadband connection, and sometimes i have a sort a heavy "dummy" traffic on my ADSL led's modem.

That happens, after visiting some particular sites (MS for example).

If i delete the LoggerData file from my TCP/IP stack, that "dummy" traffic stops.

Therefore . . .no virii related (in my system)

Ciao

That Grisoft virus checker actually found two viruses on my drive that Norton didn't find. Not new ones either... I don't think any of them caused the problem, though. I emptied most of my temporary files and the problem seemed to stop yesterday.

Did that help? Guess not...

Look the viruses up in the various online virus databases.  Chances are it'll say that they do nasty things to the active AV.
