The email address I use solely for amiga.org is getting a hell of a lot of incoming viruses, like 5 an hour, and while I realise that the from addresses are generally spoofed, most of them look like email addresses of people who visit amiga.org.
If you are running Windows, and particularly if you use MS applications for Internet access, or have a penchant for opening all email attachments without appropriate safety measures, UPDATE YOUR VIRUS SCANNER AND PLEASE CHECK YOUR MACHINE FOR VIRUSES!
-
I've been getting a lot of emails telling me that some of my emails couldn't be delivered because they were infected with the sobig.f worm.
They're only going to my hotmail one that I use for the forums, and I got 11 yesterday in the space of 2 hours :-o
-
I'm getting about 5 an hour on average.
-
I haven't seen any evidence of current viruses whatsoever - no infected mail, no port access attempts, nothing. I've never had a virus in my mail. In fact, I don't even get spam!
-
for this and other things i use linux and amiga only
windoze sux :madashell:
-
I get about 12 virus mails per hour. And only because someone was stupid enough to open virus attachment.
Argh.
How can anyone be THAT stupid??? Stupid users should be banned from the internet.
-
Checked for viruses and found nothing but I have a haunting feeling that someone somehow hacked my email adr. and uses it to send loads of crap around like ads for porno and ####. I wont give my address up without a fight tho.. I'll just sit and tire them out;)
-
How can anyone be THAT stupid???
There are that stupid and for some reason they always blame the OS instead of the dumb user behind the monitor.
Hello i am Mr virus in this email, please click the "infect my machine" attachment, the stupid user would still do it then bitch and moan about windows and microsoft when clearly the stupid user is to blame.
-
This virus finds email addresses from addressbook and uses them. I've got viruses from "Ikir" and "Bill Hoggett" for example. Faked From: field of course. And someone is getting virus emails with my email address in From: field too :-/
-
I've just recieved another 4 undelivered mail to my hotmail because of the sobig.f worm.
I also got this one:
ªþ¥ó¡G movie0045.pif
¯f¬r¦WºÙ¡GW32.Sobig.F@mm
±Ä¨úªº°Ê§@¡G ²M°£ ¥¢±Ñ : ¹jÂ÷ ¦¨¥\ :
Àɮת¬ºA¡G ¤w·P¬V
with an attatchment called Winmail.dat. I wonder if I should open this attatchment :-P
-
Just got 2 another virus emails... Looks like my virys emails are coming from Portugal. Hmm... now I got third virus email...
Aaaaarrrrggghhh...
-
winmail.dat is a specific MS Exchange thing IIRC.
Also, I think the latest virus doing the rounds is down to a few factors:
1> Unpatched, or not properly configured Windows (DCOM vuln) installations
2> Unpatched MS mail clients
3> Idiot users opening email attachments without engaging brain first.

Uuummm.... keep in mind that the blame for massive virii proliferations on the Win-DOHS platform can be put in three places - dumb users, virus writers AND Microsoft. Remember, there are variations of virii on Win-DOHS that don't even have to be opened by the user for them to infect the machine. In such case, the dumb user doesn't even enter into the picture usually. You can thank M$ for those "features" that make such a thing possible.

Strange... I haven't got a single virus mail for months.
-
Does anyone else here find it really annoying when you sit back and watch a computer do a full systems scan, the whole 30-45 mins job.. and then it finds nothing?
Such an anti-climax, it almost feels like a waste of time!
-
@ Doobrey
You'd rather it find something? :-)
Blimey, 45 minutes... presumably that's an 'all files' scan rather than the usual suspects type scan?
One thing I liked about when I used to use Eudora (before moving on to Mozilla) was that it saved attachments to their proper filenames in their own directory. This makes virus scanning very easy, and not having to fire up the email client in order to find a file someone sent you recently.
-
@mikeymike
Same here, and it's obvious that my address is being spoofed to send the virus to other people too.
My systems aren't infected, and all the incoming viruses are deleted on the server before they get anywhere near a client, but I'm still getting close to 100 a day for the past two to three days.
:-(
-
Im scanning my system now I only use outlook for amibench.i use yahoo mostly because i can get my mail from any computer. :-)

Seems that I'm getting them from 213.22.229.113 and 213.22.229.163 so who ever it is, has sent email to squid so they must read Moo as well. Alot of us who post on moo are having emails spoofed by sobig.
[Edit: I also added 213.22.229.163 and I'm virus email free so far;]

For those running Windows machines, I would highly recommend SA Proxy. It's a Spam Assassin program that kills about 90% of the spam I receive daily.

Looks good and its free maybe someone should download the source code and compile it for the next generation machines. :-)
-
I have yet to receive a single virus. Then again, it wouldn't do much good.. I haven't turned on the PC in a couple of months. :-)
-
I had to format and reinstall windows last night due to BIG infection from the Pinfi virus... I think I had it for awhile but as I stupidly never run a virus checker I didn't identify it until it was too late :-(
I see some here saying that they run Linux or AmigaOS exclusively, to be more secure... as much as I loath M$, it seems to me if either had as many users they'd be just as vulnerable......... Amiga had a huge virus problem back in the day. Do Macs get hit much?

Does your virus protection work?
The following link is to a file that is not a virus but contains a string that should be identified as one by your virus protection software. Additionally you can test your email systems virus checking by emailing it to yourself. If your winbox acctually let's you download the file you've got problems. There are several test files available at http://www.eicar.org/download/ but this one is the hardest one for most virus programs to identify. A double zipped file.

@Wayne
Spam Assassin is great. I run it myself on my personal email server. Maybe one or two spam messages make it through per MONTH.
-
Hmmmm I havent got any yet. But then I checked my email on my Amiga SYS B4 it died but now I use YAM with AMIGAFOREVER....I should not be getting viruses with that ....RIGHT ?????? :-o :-o :-o

Won't matter, once your on sobig's list, you'll get tons of virus email clogging up your hard drive. I'm not in danger of getting infected since I run Linux, but I still have to go delete the crap until I found the email source and firewalled them off.

I have had zero virus threats and zero spam related to Amiga Org e-mail addresses. :-D

At least on a non-windows machine they pose a 0% threat risk other than running you out of harddrive space.
If I do wind up on some "list", I'll find a way to filter those messages to the trashcan.

I'm running thoroughbred Amiga stuff, yet YAM received two bounced mails with SoBigF attached. It seems these were picked up and spoofed via my website which has my email addy embedded.
Nobody's safe!
Cheers,

@JaXanim
Nobody's safe!
I'm afraid so. Running Linux or AmigaOS just means your machine doesn't get infected, but you'll still get bombarded with the mails.
If you are firewalling them off, make sure they get deleted from your ISP rather than just ignored, otherwise your mailbox may get clogged with them and start rejecting genuine mail.
(I pity those poor buggers who got hit on mail accounts that have quotas on them...)
As for being subject to virus arracks, this will always happen on popular systems, just like piracy. The Amiga had its fair share of both in its heyday, and now they mostly attack Windows users. As Linux becomes more popular, so the virus threats and piracy grow.
-
This is what needs to happen - people need to be educated, in the same way kids are educated 'not to talk to strangers', etc.
And possibly viruses need to become far more catastrophic so that people are more likely to take notice, when every last one of their cherished files go bye-bye*. Actually, that's strange, isn't it? Viruses USED TO be far more system-wrecking than they are now...
* - it would be also good from the point of view of me getting more business repairing peoples' systems :-)

Yup, a full file scan on the PC(spit spit). Forget how many hours it takes for the Amiga to do one!
I am glad when it finds nothing, but I can`t help but feel let down, sort of like the ending of a crap movie.
The only time I ever got a virus on the PC was when my sister bought some work home on a floppy, then she had the fun job of telling her work that they had a virus on their systems.. and she was the systems admin at the time ! :-o

I take it you`ve never tried to use USB on Windows98 then? ;-)
I see people here blaming the users for allowing the spread of viruses..shouldn`t we look more at why they aren`t educated or aware of howto stop them?
For instance, you buy a boxed distro of linux, it comes with tonnes of CD`s and nice big manual.
What do you get with Windows? a CD and a nice big EULA ! .. no manual, apart from the built in help, but how many new users know that`s there or how to use it?
-
I take it you`ve never tried to use USB on Windows98 then?
/me watches that one fly over my head...
I've never had any problems with USB on Win98. Admittedly I don't use USB much.
I see people here blaming the users for allowing the spread of viruses..shouldn`t we look more at why they aren`t educated or aware of howto stop them?
Partly because the primary piece of advice should always be DON'T USE MS APPLICATIONS FOR INTERNET STUFF! After that, it's "don't open strange attachments you weren't expecting", after that, it's "if in doubt, virus scan it. With your up-to-date virus scanner".
I can't remember the last time I had to urgently patch my Windows system, because 99% of the patches are for dodgy software or dodgy Windows setups!
What do you get with Windows? a CD and a nice big EULA ! .. no manual, apart from the built in help, but how many new users know that`s there or how to use it?
Heh. This reminds me of my first experience with Win95. I couldn't work out how to set up a screen saver. I consulted the "manual". The only reference in the Win95 manual regarding screen savers is a single sentence:
"You can set up a screen saver". And a picture of a screen saver running.
Excellent.
-

I think I know what you mean, but simply put, an OS running under 68k emulation on an x86 box cannot run x86 binaries :-)

For those running Windows machines, I would highly recommend SA Proxy.
Don't know SA Proxy, but I like mailwasher, gives me "total" control over my mail
MailWasher Pro (http://www.firetrust.com/index.php)
The free version works rather well..
Mailwasher Free (http://www.mailwasher.net/)
I'll have a look at SA later on..
-
@Mikeymike
"don't open strange attachments you weren't expecting"
The computer tech/administrator at college even went further than that - "don't open attachments"!!!
He always just deleted them, even the ones from people he knew. And so do I these days, cos a) it'll be a virus or b) it'll be some boring peace and love chain letter to clog up your inbox

Since I firewalled those two sites, I've had one sobig and nothing else. Pretty good considering I was getting one ever five to ten minutes.

Hi everybody :-)
Just got some WinBlows virus in my mails on the pagestream mailling lists, until deron kills the attachments.
I haven't seen a single Amiga virus on my Amigas since more than TEN years! :-P
AMIGA rocks! WinBlows ..... ;-)
Amigalement,
Jean-François, Amiga ONLY since 1985.

You can't blame viruses that travel thru email just on windows.. Where was the first virus ever? Well guess what it was on your Amiga platform..
Viruses that travel thru email is just a side effect of having a connected world, and honestly the first virus to travel thru email made it's way on email servers.
If you don't have good virus protection available to you I suggested you sign up for some type of web based email service.. At least the email with the offending code is not getting downloaded to your computer that way, and most of these services have automatic checking.
I can't feel sorry for anyone who gets an email virus if they aren't investing in good anti-virus software anyway. My anti-virus software (with proper updating) has never failed to identify and kill an emailed virus. This takes time money and staffing though for companies to offer such thing. I can't say how much I really appreciate what McAffee, and Symantec do today..
If it wasn't on a PC it would be still happening on whatever we were on..
The Amiga is lucky no one bothers to write exploits for it anymore really because it's relavence has descreased, due to lack of useage. Virus writers go for mass infection it seems..
-

... a clueless connected world.
-
long time since i got a virus..., but then again i am on amiga... for now its pretty safe...

Luckily my mailserver checks for viruses and removes them before they go to end users. I haven't got single virus with email... but it doesn't affect to spam (yet), I'll get about 1000 spams in month, but running spamassassin on unix account helps for that :)
