Title: Deciphering this Error Message

I recently booted an A500 I just bought and I get the following error at boot before the insert workbench disk screen:

Software Failure. Press Left Mouse Button to Continue.

Error: 8000 0004
Task: 00C034F8

I trying to figure out if I need to replace a compnent and if so which one?

Thanks. Any help is greatly appreciated.

 Try reseat every socketed chip inside the Amiga.

 Also check the battery on the A501 (you may have to take the tin foil who is around it), if any.

 BTW: it is an A500 or an A500+? In the plus case, also check for battery damage on the motherboard.

It is a A500... Its not a A501 its a supra A500 ramcard (internal). Every Chip... OK... Thought the error would point to something more specifuc.

Here's what some of the guru numbers mean:

  0x80000003      /* Illegal address access (ie: odd address access) */
  0x80000004      /* Illegal instruction */
  0x80000008      /* Privilege violation error */

An illegal instruction error could be caused by a software malfunction, not just a hardware malfunction.

Have you tried a different disk? Is the WB on that disk modified (perhaps something is running in the SS that's causing the trap) or an exact copy of a CBM disk?

Sound very much like a RAM failure, Agnus socket problem and/or bad contacts. What happens if you try to boot w/o the SupraRAM?

The 00C034F8 address indicates that the system failed while running code in Ranger memory (i.e. SupraRAM memory, you've got an old OCS Agnus or the expansion RAM is not remapped correctly).

If the system also fails w/o the ram expansion, it's most probably the Agnus socket. If it doesn't, inspect the expansion card for any visible damage, esp. around the battery (it hasn't leaked yet??). Switch it off (!) and boot the system. Use a memory test utility to test RAM C00000-C7FFFF.

PS: As it seems the Supra can't be turned off by jumper/switch. You'll need to cut the _EXRAM solder pad on the mainboard to deactivate it.

PPS: Looks like the Supra uses a non-rechargeable battery which doesn't leak. Surely needs replacement anyway.
