Hi people,
Yesterday I started playing with my IVS Grandslam hard drive which did not work for a long time. I always thought that the problem was with the hard disk inside it. However when I removed the hard disk and tried to connect it with my amiga I realised that Workbench could not see the additional 2Mb fast RAM. Therefore I suspected that the SCSI controller was not working and not the hard drive.
Today I came back from work and removed the hard disk I have in the GVP HD8+ and instead of that one I connected the hard disk I had in the Grandslam unit! ... it worked. The same workbench I used to use when I was a Kid was infront of me again.
... but I have a problem.
You can imagine that the most dear thing on that hard drive are the saved games. These where on 'hd2'. When workbench is comming up I can see 'hd1' named 'Applications' without any problem. However on desktop I can see 'hd2:????'. In the past this 'pass-time'. Does this mean that this partition is damaged and that I lost all my saved games ;-( What can I do? Do you people think I can still recover anything on this partition or maybe I can remount it or something. The workbench I have installed is 2.04!
Regards,
Sim085
-
Hi person,
'hd2:????
Not a sight you really want to see I'm afraid :-( But there is hope as I have recovered from a partition like this using Quarterback-Tools and chose to recover the data to a different partition. However, I believe it's a commercial program and don't think you can download it free from anywhere.
-
Is this an amiga tool? I was thinking of maybe connecting this hard disk to a pc! Directory Opus does not allow me to enter in this partition; tells me to insert disk or something.
-
I've always had pretty good luck recovering fried ffs partitions with disksalv, which is an Aminet download.
http://aminet.net/package/disk/salv/DiskSalv11_32 (http://aminet.net/package/disk/salv/DiskSalv11_32)
-
Yes it is an Amiga tool. You won't get into that partition with Directory Opus. I've never connected Amiga hard drives to a PC myself, but it sounds very unlikely to me.
Prehaps someone could confirm this for you?
-
I've heard of ppl hooking up ide/scsi drives to a win machine, though only for use with UAE. I believe Linux has nataive FFS/OFS filesystems, and can access Amiga partitions directly, but I'm not sure if theres any decent recovery/salvage programs that'll work under linux. I'm not too sure if UAE emulates the hardware access to the controller enough for disksalv to work, either, I've never tried it. (My xp machine is a laptop, and my wife gets nervous if I get within 10 feet of her computer with a screwdriver) I know its possible with "healthy" partitions w/ UAE or linux, though.
-
So to get this program on my amiga can I download it on my PC; insert an amiga floppy in the computer and use WinUAE to save that program on the floppy? or talking {bleep}?
-
Unfortunatly, UAE can't write to Amiga floppy disks due to limitations in PC floppy controller hardware. I think your best bet would be to download proggy off of Aminet, save it to a 720K DD floppy (Put scotch tape over the hole on the upper-left side of the floppy before formatting, thats the hole without the write protect tab, this will force windows into seeing it as a DD floppy instead of HD, and if you can format it on the Amiga it tends to be a bit more reliable), and copy it to your Amiga using Crossdos (I belive its included in AOS 2.x and up, it'll be the PC0: device in sys:storage/dosdrivers, either type mount pc0: or double click its icon, and the Amiga will be able to read 720K PC-Floppys, though unless you have the right version, the filenames will have the original dos 8.3 length) and use lha x -x pc0: ram: (or wherever you want the program) to unpack the file. Then just double click the disksalv icon, the menu should show your dh2: partition, and give you several options in a drop menu. (undelete, salvage, repair, etc...) I would recommend salvage, which will allow you to save your game files to a good partition/floppy disk, and then try a repair after that if you like. Or just try to re-format after you salvage all your important data. If you don't have crossdos, you can possibly transfer the file across a null-modem cable using a terminal program. (There's several for Amiga, windows typically has hyperterm, which supports zmodem and works will with all the Amiga term proggys I've played with, TERM 4.7 being my favorite)

That isn't total {bleep} but again someone who uses WinUAE would have to talk you through it.
EDIT - See post above :-D
-
also, if you just want to stick to UAE, you need a scsi controller in the PC, and I belive there's a device driver for uae to access it directly, though it probably defaults to the pc's IDE interface. (Useful for A600/A1200/A4000 drives as those have IDE, though use the laptop size drives, though I'm not sure with the 4000 about that), but as soon as everything is configured and UAE can see the drive, disksalv might be able to salvage the info off of it. I believe there's a few threads on this forum about hooking physical amiga drives to UAE.

Hi, I found a pc floppy which works. I put scotch (transparent one) on the whole which does not have the write protect control. I inserted in the Amiga and on workbench it shows me df0:????. How do I format it now? and is transparent scotch good?
-
after you mount pc0: (either with the icon in storage/dosdrivers or by typing mount pc0:) you need to format pc0:. df0: will still attempt to access the disk as an Amiga floppy, pc0: will access it as a PC floppy. if you get the pc0:??? icon on workbench, you can select it and choose format from the menu, otherwise you can type "format drive pc0: name You can do this on the Amiga without the tape, but when you put it into the pc, you'll need the tape on it or it'll try tto access the 720k disk as a 1.44 mb disk. Transparent tape should work fine, though I should warn you that long-term, the floppy won't be to reliable that way. (1.44mb disks don't like being formatted as 720k, though for 1 or 2 file transfers it should work fine) anyway, I gotta go to work, so hopefully the guy from the UK who's been posting in here can help you out a bit more if yyou have any more problems.

Thanks kvasir for all your help ... have a nice day :) me soon going sleeping ;)

Hi,
i had a joke with a 2Gb scsi hdd too years later.
In fact, it was the motor grease that became solid !
I put in a warn place for hours, and it restarted...
you can place it in a not to warm owen, and the owen resistor must be turned off !!!
-
My hard disk does work ... I can see different partitions without any problems. The problem is there is a partition that workbench cannot read. This is the partition where I had my games saved (which makes it very likely to get corrupted since I think I only made use of that partition).
When I insert a floppy in my Amiga I always get 'DF0:????'. I do not get 'PC0:????'. Also typing 'mount PC0' gives me an error. I have an A500+ with Workbench 2.04 installed on it. The disk I inserted seemed to work fine on the PC. However when I put scotch and inserted on the PC I could not understand how to make it format at 720k.

Sim085: where (geographically) are you? I'm sure one of us on here can send you a bootable floppy containing XFS (http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/xfs) or FAT95 (http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/fat95) if your Amiga's instance of CrossDOS won't play nicely.

Thanks A4000_Mad for the screen shot. That helped me a lot and I did manage to format the disk. Now how do I move the DiskSalv11_32.lha to the disk. Is it just a matter of saving the .lha file in the disk. Also when I put the disk in Amiga I still get DF0:???? ... is this normal?#
Sorry for the stupid questions, never did this befor.
I live in Malta; However I do not mind doing all this :) at least I am learning out of all this.
-
Yes, the plan would now be to put the DiskSalv11_32.lha file onto the floppy and take it to the Amiga. You would then use a program such as lha in the Amiga to unpack the DiskSalv11_32.lha using a certain command which we can come back to later (lha will probably need to be downloaded with your PC and taken to the Amiga on the floppy as well unless it is already present in the C drawer of your Workbench. You can check if it is there with your Directory Opus).
Your next problem appears to be getting the Amiga to read the PC formatted floppy. In Workbench 3.0 there is an icon called PC0 inside a drawer called DOSDrivers which is inside a drawer called Storage. i.e. Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers
After inserting the PC floppy and double clicking on PC0 an additional icon would appear for the PC floppy together with one called DF0:???
However, I don't think the icon PC0 is present in your Workbench 2.04. Can you check this?
-
Hi, thanks for the reply.
I moved the lha file on the disk. I then went to Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers. I inserted the disk and clicked on the PC0 icon. When I did this I got the following error.
C:Mount
Program failed (error #80000004)
Wait for disk activity to finish
and I have the option to either 'suspend' or 'reboot'.
I thought this could be because of some version problem. I therefore inserted the storage disk of workbench 3.1 and it gave me the same error :(
Any ideas?
Should I maybe not boot from the hard drive?
-
Hmmm..... Other files to check for are CrossDOSFilesystem in the L drawer of Workbench (Workbench:L) and I believe mfm.device in Workbench:Devs
Yes, it's worth checking that the files are present on your Workbench floppy disks and booting from them. If PC0 is not present on the Workbench disk, try looking on the Extras disk (it's been a while since I've used 2.04)
-
PC0 is present on my workbench. However when I click it I get the error mentioned previously. I will check for the other files. However without PC0 working I can't go forward right?
-
I think it's probably a case that PC0 cannot work without the other files being present.
-
Hi,
At first I could not see these files when opening the directory from workbench. However I then opened directory opus and I found the two files you mentioned in their place. So can't understand why PC0 is not working! :(
-
Workbench has hidden files as with windoze. To see them after opening a drawer you need to hold down the right mouse button, go to the top of the Workbench screen and under the heading 'Window' select 'Show' and then 'All files'. They should then appear. But DirectoryOpus is far quicker for checking that files are present and moving them around etc.
I was just busy grabbing the script of PC0 as seen in my Directory Opus:-
/* $VER: PC0 40.1 (31.8.93)
*
* CrossDOS file system entry
*
* This file enables CrossDOS on the built-in floppy drive normally
* referred to as DF0:. PC1 does the same for DF1. By creating new versions
* of this file and changing the Unit line to use other numbers, you can
* make CrossDOS available on other devices. For example, changing the value
* of Unit to 2 would create a mount file that would enable CrossDOS on DF2.
*/
FileSystem = L:CrossDosFileSystem
Device = mfm.device
Flags = 1
Surfaces = 2
SectorsPerTrack = 9
SectorSize = 512
Reserved = 1
Interleave = 0
LowCyl = 0
HighCyl = 79
Buffers = 5
BufMemType = 0
StackSize = 600
Priority = 10
GlobVec = -1
DosType = 0x4D534400
/* The Unit field is controlled by tooltypes in the PC0 icon.
*
* Unit = 0
*/
You can see that we were on the right track by the 11th line FileSystem = L:CrossDosFilesystem and the 12th line Device = mfm.device
Unfortunately this will probably have to be my last post tonight and we are a bit stuck. As per the error report you got earlier, I wonder if there is a fault with your file called Mount which should be in Workbench:C
You could try using DirectoryOpus to copy it in again overwriting the existing one. Prehaps even putting in the version from a Workbench 3.1 disk.
-
Hi, not gona keep you :) Thanks for all the help you gave me so far ... it was really apreciated! :) I will do how you suggested in your last post. Thanks again for the help :)
-
You're very welcome :-) :pint:

Guess you'll find this in the morning.
I did as you suggested, copied the mount file from the Workbench 3.1 disk to the Workbench installed on the drive. After that I could see the contents on the disk :-) :-)
I am going to click salvage now ...
-
8-)
As usual with A.Org I came back again for one last look :-)
Glad that worked ok :cheers:

Hello again, got back from work a few hours ago, and figured I'd check this thread (since I checked the notification option and got a ton of e-mail about it :-D) Nce to see everything got hammered out, and I hope disksalv works for you! I would have checked earlier, but my wife found "I want a hippopotomus for christmas" on youtube, and I spent 2 hours using the latest getvideo script on Aminet and FFMPEG to convert it into .mp3 so she can play it for my daughter. I'm guessing thats 2 hours I'll soon regret spending.... Just wanted to mention how great it is to see Amiga users unite and support each other like this. :-D Anyway, I've been to Valletta, Malta in 2001, had a blast there. Still the party island I (barely) remember it as?
-
Thanks A4000_Mad and kvasir for all the help given. I have played with DiskSalv2 a little and with salvage I managed to backup all the files I had on hd2. I then used the repair option and hd2 was emptied. I copied the files I previously backed up and things seem to be working again :) So thank you very much. Also I learnt how to make transfers from PC to Amiga using floppy disks :) Thank You!
-
Hi sim085 & kvasir
Been out all day but thought I'd drop by by before hitting the hay :-)
@ sim085
Glad you managed to save all your data 8-)
To avoid geting jumbled up file names you might want to put fat95 in Workbench:L and use MS0 instead of PC0.....
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/PC0-MS0a.jpg)
Compare the contents of the same floppy using PC0 (top) and MS0 (bottom).....
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/PC0-MS0b.jpg)
You might also be interested to see how the same floppy disk looks in OS3.9.....

G'night :pint:

Does fat95 come with Workbench 3.1? Or I have to download it from somewhere in order to have it available for Workbench 2.4? (like I did for disksav2).
Also is it possible to move some files from the Amiga to the PC using this method? At the moment I am at work so cannot really see of fat95 is already in my Workbench L directory!
-
No, you have to get it from Aminet:
http://aminet.net/disk/misc/fat95.lha
-
sim085 wrote:

Yes indeed! You would initially use the method of transfer that you have just learned to get the files fat95 snd MS0 into your Amiga.
-
Oki, I will try this when I get back home :) Thanks :)
-
Hi, I am back home and (obviously) I tried to copy FAT95.lha to my A500+. Now I have two problems (questions).
The first one is where do I find MH0.lha? I tried searching on google and did not find it. Or this one is already in FAT95.lha?
Also, I am ashamed of asking this; but what do I do when I move the lha file on the Amiga. Last time (in some way) DevSave2 came listed under a list of programs and I used it like that. I doubled clicked on the FAT95.lha and a document opens to tell me about the compression or something. But how do I extract its content!! Last time I must have done something by mistake. I was under the impression that I only had to move the .lha file on the amiga to have the program!
-
Hi sim085
Firstly note that things are going to look quite different in your Amiga than in the screenshots I have taken with OS3.9.
I did wonder how you previously managed to unpack the DiskSalv11_32.lha file. I was expecting you to report that it had a jumbled up file name when viewed on the floppy with your Amiga, and would have told you to drag it into Ram and rename it correctly.
where do I find MS0.lha? I tried searching on google and did not find it. Or this one is already in FAT95.lha?
There is no file called MS0.lha. The file FAT95.LHA unpacks to give a drawer called fat95. Other drawers and files including MS0 are inside the created drawer called fat95...............
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/FattyA.jpg)
My suggested way to proceed is:-
1. Use DirectoryOpus to check that you have a file called LHA in Workbench:C (If not present you will have to get it from possibly Aminet and put it in)
2. Use your PC0 method of floppy disk transfer to get the file FAT95.LHA into Ram of your Amiga. If it appears to just vanish when you drag and drop it into Ram, go back to my previous post that begins with "Workbench has hidden files as with Windoze". Rename FAT95.LHA correctly if its name is jumbled up when you look at it in Ram.
In the drawer Workbench:System you should find an icon called Shell or CLI. This is like the command line in Windoze which you used previously to format the 720K floppy disk with your PC.
3. Double click on the Shell or CLI icon and at the command line type:-
cd Ram: and press the Enter key
(cd stands for Current Directory)
4. Now type:-
lha x -a FAT95.LHA and press the Enter key.................
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/FattyB.jpg)
Immediately after pressing Enter you should see a fast scrolling list of files that are being extracted out of FAT95.LHA
5. Close your Ram window then re-open it again and you should see a created drawer called fat95.
6. Get the file fat95 and put it in Workbench:L and get MS0 and put it in Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers (if you have a Workbench:Devs/DOSDrivers drawer, then putting it in there would get MS0 activated every time you start your Amiga. If not, just double click on MS0 in Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers when you want it activated (You can actually put MS0 in any drawer you like in your hard drive and it will still work when double clicked).
You could of course use your DirectoryOpus to get these files and put them in the correct locations. You'll find the file fat95 at the location Ram:fat95/l and you'll find MS0 in Ram:fat95/english
:-)

Hi A4000_Mad,
Sorry for the late reply. I have been trying working on this but cannot get it right. When I insert the disk in the amiga drive I get the following error immediately;
Error Validating
File allocation table
in device PC0
Results uncertain
Proceed at your own risk
I press the ok button and then open directoryopus. In directory opus I access PC0 without any problems. I then try to move the file FAT95.lha on Workbench. Each time I get the following error;
MSDOS 5.0
has a read error
on disk block 270
Error = 23
Block not found
After pressing cancel for sometime the file actually get transferred with the same size. I thought this was fine. However when I try to extract the data using the lha tool I have in Workbench/C I get an error that it could not extract the contents of FAT95.lha
Something stranger is that when I tried to move disksave2 I had everything in scrambled text and now everything is in clear text? Even the disk displayed on Workbench (the icon) is clearly labelled as MSDOS5.0!
-
"Sorry for the late reply". Now worries, Amigans are used to waiting for years ;-)
Sounds like your floppy disk has got corrupted. I suggest you either try again with a different floppy disk or format the same one again with your PC or your Amiga. To do it with the Amiga click on the icon MSDOS5.0, hold down the right mouse button and under the heading 'Icons' at the top of the Workbench screen select 'Format disk...'
If you are given the option of doing a 'Format' or a 'Quick format' I would choose 'Format'.
-
Hi,
I tried to format the disk from the amiga as you suggested but immediately I get the error 'couldn't format cylinder 0'.
I tried to format another floppy disk from windows using the method you previously suggested. Everything works fine on windows (so the floppy seems to be ok). But as soon as I try insert the floppy in the amiga I start getting the errors mentioned above.
Also I still can't understand how come I no longer get scrambled text when I insert the floppy in the Amiga drive! If it is seeing the disk as MSD5.0 then it seems that FAT95 has already been installed right!? or?
I do not know; but the disk started to be displayed in clear text after I moved the original FAT95.lha on Workbench and these errors started to appear after that. Could it be that I have some auto install if that even exsisted back then!
-
Hi sim085
Sorry I'm late but I knew this would require some serious free time for playing with my computers :-D
I've just been through the whole thing myself to check it out. I'd never actually got around to putting tape over the hole on a 1.44MB floppy, so I started by doing that and using the command Format A: /t:90 /n:9 in Windoze XP to format it to 720K (works a treat :-))
Next I downloaded the file FAT95.LHA from Aminet, put it onto the floppy disk and took it to my A4000.
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/sim085A.jpg)
1. After inserting the disk and getting an unreadable icon, I opened up Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers and double clicked on the icon PC0.
If it is seeing the disk as MSD5.0 then it seems that FAT95 has already been installed right!? or?
Wrong it would seem. I also got a floppy disk icon named MSDOS5.0 on my Workbench screen which has CrossDos written on it. So, getting an icon called MSDOS5.0 is *not* an indication that fat95 is installed. (It is the driver PC0 which uses the CrossDoSFileSystem in Workbench:L)
I've always installed fat95 by simply putting the single file of the same name into the L drawer of Workbench. Its file size is 26488 and you can easily look with your DirectoryOpus to see if it is in there.
2. I dragged the file FAT95.LHA into Ram.
3. I opened up a Shell and typed:-
cd Ram: and pressed the Enter key.
followed by typing:-
lha x -a FAT95.LHA and pressing the Enter key.
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o164/Cyberstorm604e/sim085B.jpg)
4. I closed my Ram window and then opened it again to see the newly created drawer called fat95 (You may need to select 'Clean up' from the menus at the top of the screen to bring it into view). Inside the fat95 drawer was a drawer called english.
5. I went in the drawer called english and just double clicked on the icon MS0. This made another icon for the same floppy disk appear which was named 5C14-CDBF and had a Windows logo on it, so everything had worked perfectly 8-)
After pressing cancel for sometime
I believe that repeatedly clicking cancel was just telling the Amiga to skip what it couldn't read and move on to the next part that it couldn't read properly. Repeatedly clicking on 'Retry' would probably have been the better way to go. But don't bother mate as I still think it is a problem with your floppy disk. Try formatting others with your PC and make sure that you don't spell FAT95.LHA wrongly in the Shell command line of your Amiga. I only missed out the dot and was was told "Unable to open archive!" "Operation failed".
P.S.
Decided to go through it again with an A4000 running OS3.1. This should be nearer to what you are seeing with your own Amiga :-)

A: /t:90 /n:9
The /t:90 should be /t:80 or? In a previous post I think it was /t:80. I thought maybe that was the mistake, but when I try using /t:90 on Windows I get an error; something wrong parameters.

Thanks. I do have OS4 Classic and an A4000 capable of running it. But I'm just using OS3.9 with an AmigaOS4 backdrop in my main A4000 which was used for most of the screenshots :-)
