Title: What Now ????
Post by: don27dog on August 12, 2008, 11:24:59 PM
As some of you know by helping me get it running a while back.. I was home over the x-mas holidays last year and found my old Amiga 3000T sitting in my parents attic.It was left untouched since 96' I have since found various parts on ebay and Amigakit. I now have 3.1 roms, os 3.9, Mediator, voodoo3, network card, Phase 5 68060 50mhz+Cyberstorm 604e 150mhz PPC, 128 megs ram and it just sits here running an old BBS that no one calls anymore. I need some ideas of what I can do with this this thing. I guess I could order os4 for classic but I know nothing about it.

Deneb USB (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/USD.php?url=product_info.php?products_id=795) would give it a new lease of life

Sell the hard-to-find hardware so someone can actually use it. There are a limited number of them and they're hard to get. As long as it's sitting in closets the Amiga software pool isn't growing, but shrinking, thus the Amiga, for what is the hardware without the software, is shrinking with it.

I'm sure you can run a BBS with lower-spec hardware. I'm almost certain the BBS software isn't PPC-only, while new software need a PPC.

buy quake2, heretic2, wipeout2097, shogo, freespace, get them installed and running, go "WOW" that the amiga can play these games, reminiss back to 'the days' about how many machines/ppc cards may have been sold if these were released 12-15 years ago... :-(

i dunno if OS4 supports the mediator? but it could be a way of re-vitalising any PPC expanded classic machine?
otherwise, if you can, get a deneb USB card. USB lan adapter, usb sound card, usb mouse, usb hard disk, flashrom to avoid reboots. all on zorro3! sounds good to me! :-)

or just for laughs, run warpOS WinUAE to emulate an amiga 500 to play those old ADF files... from within a window workbench. :-D

i got amidog's N64 emulator running. able to play mario64 at 6-9 frames a second :lol: shame it doesn't seem to work with any other roms though. i used to love waverace on the N64 and Gamecube

maybe get a PPC based DVD player, and figure out how low you need to get the graphics options before it'll play video nicely?

all you need is time to have a play  :-)

@darksun9210:

LOL! Good suggestions (love the one about lowering the resolution for DVD playback! Or rather DivX playback...)

Do what I have been doing and leave it running 24/7 de-coding rc keys for the amiga tema effort

What a waste of energy - a low powered x86 system would be able to perform the same calculations at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, OS4 does support the mediator. The OS4 native drivers won't support any pci cards that rely on the graphics-card DMA hack. However, you can use the drivers that come on the Mediator's CD (so long as you use all Mediator drivers for PCI devices).

Personally, I think that OS4 is worth getting.
