Title: Idefix97 Latest Version?
Post by: dannyp1 on August 11, 2008, 05:44:45 PM
Is the idefix97 version available on Aminet the most recent version?  If it is not where is the latest version available?

Also, I was reading some old threads and came across one that said that idefix97 should only be used with OS 3.0 and older.  I had never heard this before.  I have used it with OS 3.9 and never noticed a problem.  Is there something I'm missing here?

at the Support page of Individual Computers, you can find the very latest IdeFIX and atapi.device (more other components)

Final updates by Elaborate Bytes for XSurfIDE, Buddha, IDE-fix
Atapi V120.5, BuddhaIDE V103.17, XSurfIDE V104.2, IDE-max V119.17

Dunno what that is but that is not a full IDE-Max (The new name for IDEFix97) installation.

IDEFix/IDEMax has always been and still is a commercial product.

I have also replaced the Aminet version with the latest one, once i discovered it. It has no changelog, i don't know what the differences are, but i don't think i have comfronted any problems with it.

You only have to disable the scsi.device of AOS 3.9.

if only you have take a look to the readme, you would know where these files come from!

"These are the final updates of Elaborate Bytes drivers for
Individual Computers' products. They were found on a disk
that has been included with a letter from Oliver Kastl to
Jens Schönfeld, but that disk has never been looked at -
until now. Sorry for the delay, the letter was dated
december 2000 - I must have forgotten it over the Xmas
business back then.

These files are _final_. Oliver Kastl has disconnected his
Amiga, and is only working on commercial projects for
non-Amiga systems currently. Nearly no bugreports have been
sent about these drivers, so I guess these final versions
are just re-compiled version bumps. If anything works better
than before, please report! ... etc"

I read it. And I never asked where it came from. I knew where it came from, the link was provided.

I intimated that it was not a full IDE-Max installation... and it isn't it's just a few file updates.

and so? who ever said it was a full IDE Max archive.

I find your remark, unuseful if not worse at least!

Which comment? The one where I provided a link to where to buy a full copy of IDE-Max? Hardly unhelpful.

I appreciate that you were trying to help dannyp1 by verry accurately showing him where to find the VERY latest IDE-Max related files... But I do not believe that was what he was really asking.

It is my interpretation that dannyp1 wanted to know where he could download the latest full IDE-Max installation for free and as I pointed out, he'll have to buy it :-P

I don't remember saying anything about wanting something "free".  I was interested in what was the most recent version and where to get it.  At one time I bought the program idefix97 and it was regestered.  The aminet version was more recent than the one I bought and my registration number worked with it just fine.  I just wondered about a newer version and yes, you gave me the info I needed to get a newer version.  And yes I will be buying it even though the single diskette will set me back about $50 US dollars.

@dannyp1

You don't need to buy another license. The version from Aminet is the most recent one and if your license key works with it, it's perfectly legal.

I never heard that IDEfix only works with 3.0 and below. It was made to work with 3.1 at least. And the version from Aminet works perfectly with OS 3.9 even *without* changing anything (scsi.device).

Those people complaining about IDEfix not working with 3.9 have older versions, mostly OEM versions without a key and are not able to upgrade to the latest version for free.

Thomas

I'm really confused now?  Are you telling me that idefix97 and idemax97 are exactly the same program?  If this is so than I wasted almost $50 yesterday ordering from versalia what I thought was an upgraded version.  If this is really true than evertone should be made aware of the fact.  It would be very misleading if it is the same old program just with a new name!

@alexh

ok it was a misunderstanding :-)

What i was trying to say is, if dannyp1 own a registered copy of IdeFix97 (the Aminet version plus a valid key) he can use the latest components from Individual Computers support page (even if unofficial, they are the latest one).

Well it looks like idefix97 and idemax97 are exactly the same.  I just got an email from Vesalia saying that they were the same and sending me a refund of my money.  I guess the name of the program had to be changed because of a cartoon character in France.  Well you learn something every day.

Yes, they are. There is a french comic strip called Asterix & Obelix. Idefix is a character in this comic (a small dog). Now the publisher thought that IDE-fix was a copyright violation against Idefix and forced the author of IDE-fix to change the name. He changed it into IDE-max. The software is still the same of course.

BTW, the description at Vesalia reads "IDE-max '97 The software formerly known as IDE-fix '97 ;-)". It should be obvious that it's the same.

Bye,
Thomas
