Title: Motherboard stand-offs
Post by: motorollin on July 31, 2008, 06:40:22 PM
Anyone know where I can find some of these in the UK?

[EDIT] Sorry for the massive picture. Replaced... [/EDIT]

I've looked around but can't find any. There are some on eBay but the international shipping was really expensive.

TIA

I got mine from Maplin. (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=standoff&source=15&SD=Y)

Hmm just noticed theres no screws on your picture. Is that a requirement?

You could try RS Components here (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/)

Item 303-5324 is similar but not exact. The dome end can be cut off if necessary. Plus its available in different sizes.

@Turambar
Thanks. I had seen those ones from Craplin but need flat ones, since I'm attaching the motherboard to Lego so need a flat base to stick to the lego bricks. I suppose as per ZeBeeDee's suggestion I could cut the bases off, though I'm not sure how smooth the bottom will be if I do that. They're only a couple of quid and Craplin is only 10 minutes away on my bike, so I'll pop over tomorrow.

@ZeBeeDee
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try the ones from Craplin first and if not will consider those. Though, don't you need an account to order from RS?

Nah mate ... you can order without making an account. You only need to register with them as a non-business customer here (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/authHome.html)

Dremel or sandpaper the standoff's after cutting them :-)

Hi Moto,

Not sure about UK suppliers, but in Oz I can get self adhesive nylon standoffs:

(http://www.altronics.com.au/images/prod/H/H1406.gif)

They have a small piece of double sided tape on the base, and provide a really firm bond to plastics.

Farnell have some similar products, though they are not the cheapest bunch to deal with. I can buy this sort of component from small electronics retailers, who usually have a much better price than Farnell or RS. I don't know of any small players in the UK market though. I would generally only go to Farnell or RS for hard to find parts, due to their high pricing.

Be careful to match the hole size with the standoff. A lot of PCBs use M3 mount holes, while a lot of nylon standoffs are made for M4.

Hi Oli! Thanks for the info. Your comment about PCB holes gave me an idea - search for self-adhesive *PCB* stand-offs rather than *motherboard* standoffs. Sure enough, I found
these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350081679897), which are perfect! If anybody else is looking for these, Rapid Electronics in the UK also sell them, but they were more expensive than from this eBay seller. I have measured the mount holes in the EFIKA and they are 4mm, so these standoffs should be fine.

Thanks again!
