what part(s) of it are you talking about cleaning? Surface marks that haven't scratched the case can be removed with a gum eraser... do a search and you'll find some threads on cleaning PCBs, and there's a big one one recently about de-yellowing plastics.. :)

Removing the yellowing from plstic is one of the most debated things among collectors.  There is no good answer, sometimes if the yellowing is not too deep you can remove it with a scrubbing pad and some sort of abrasive powder or gently using sand paper.  Try to work in circles as you want to minimise the scratch marks.

There is a far more dangerous solution, WD40, but it could turn your computer into a Dali art object so I take no responsibility for suggesting it...

A good solution is spray paint.  It creates an interesting and unique colour to your already unique computer.  BUT, this probably has a negative effect on it's value as a collectable...

then try the eraser method - head down to staples or office depot and get a good quality gum eraser, and just gently rub away the dirt... I've used this technique before on computer plastics, it's cheap, doesn't do any harm even if it doesn't work, and is fairly effective.

@persia: the nice thing about the eraser method is it's less abrasive than sand paper or a scrubbing pad. i think he just wants to get it clean, which this will work for. yellowing is another matter altogether... :(

Rubber Rejuvenator. It's used to clean and restore hardened rubber rollers in printing equipment. Works great on many plastic surfaces (ever try taking permanent marker off of a dry erase board? This does it!).

I've used it to clean many computers.. The plastic bezels and the painted metal surfaces.

Find it at local printing supply shops (Xpedx)

Of course there's everyone's favorite... Mr. Sheen!

Distilled white vinegar/distilled water solution works pretty good, a little compressed air for the keyboard and motherboard.

I use Plexus for regular cleaning, it has UV protection and leaves a wax coating, so it should help prevent yellowing. Works fantastic on most computer equipment.

I remove the plastic casing and let it sit in warm water with some soap in it, then I scrub it with more soap and a stiff brush. If the case is in good condition (no yellowing) you will get a nice finish.

But if the case is already yellow it is still going to look ugly. The problem with physically rubbing the case is that you will erase some of the texture from the casing...

Usually, I just use the blood of {bleep} children to get off the dirt stains. When it comes to UV damage, the blood of virginal women works best.

Hope it helps.

That's almost impossible to find these days. I'd use a Magic Eraser.

I used to put both halved of my 500 case in the dishwasher.  I'd also put all the key caps in there, too, but you need something to hold them in place or else they can end up in the trap and under lower arm!
