Title: What do you call this thing-a-majig?
Post by: cpfuture on July 15, 2008, 05:39:23 PM
Hi!

I bought a scandoubler for my A500 from one of A.org's fellow forum members (thx Erkan!). It's the Multivision 500 (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=353).

As I expected it would not fit together with my accelerator, because the Multivision 500 plugs into Denise's socket, which is covered by my Viper 530. I was thinking of getting some sort of extension cable that plugs into Denise's socket and then extends the socket to a different spot in my A500 where I have enough room to position the Multivision.

I've uploaded an example of such an extension (used on a kickstart switch I have) to my site which you can see here (http://www.easygalaxy.net/cfamiga/pics/kickstart_switch.jpg)

Thing is, I've no idea what you call this and have had no luck Googling for it. Anyone know what it's called and where I can order one? I've tried searching for combinations and variations of terms like '48-pin', 'DIP', 'extension', 'extender', etc. but no luck yet.

I suspect you mean something along the lines of a 'IC socket extension'.

Hows your soldering skills? You might have to make your own as I've never seen anything like that for Amiga's.

Hi,

Glad that it arrived safely! :-)

You could get two IC-sockets and then simply solder cables between the sockets. You could do the same with the 64-pin CPU-socket but I guess the turbo board is difficult to move around the A500.

Thanks! Unfortunately my soldering skills really suck. It would probably end up being an undependable monstrosity, so I think I'll use the MultiVision in one of my other A500's for now. :-)

If you have the space in your 500, the easiest way is to raise the Viper with a couple of 68000 sockets. Looks ugly but it works.  ;-)

Hey, that's not such a bad idea! I'll have to check how much I can raise the Viper without hitting the keyboard. Thanks!!!

I did the same thing to my Derringer CPU card in my A2000 to make room for the MegaChip that plugged in to the agnus socket under the MegaChip. Worked fine.

In addition, reichelt.de has got these sockets for crimping; they call them IC socket for flat ribbon ("IC-Sockel für Flachkabel") - but only up to 32 pins. I'm sure you can find larger ones elsewhere.

Conrad.de seems to have 40 pin ones (742120 - 62), at least the pin side. The socket side may be very difficult to find, possibly you can find something to plug in between. :-)

... Oops - of course you'd need a 48 pin version - phew, that's a tough one. I don't think a 28 and 20 pin would fit next to each other...

You should just send me that Viper530. Then you can use the scandoubler, no problem. :-D

Just my 2p.
