Title: Selling my Amiga1200...Maybe
Post by: drewz21 on July 15, 2008, 03:21:20 AM
I'm seriously considering selling my beloved
Amiga 1200, Blizzard 1260-68060/50Mhz, 66MB RAM, 4GB HD with OS 3.0.

Not because I want to but financies dictate I may need to.  What do you think would be a fair asking price?  And is anyone on Amiga.org interested before I possibly put it up on Ebay?

Thanks!
Drew

Yes would love your Blizzard 1260 but I'm too poor (I seem to have spent all my money on Amiga bits  :-P)

To get the best price you're better off selling the Blizzard + ram on its own.

Also, don't forget Amibay (http://www.amibay.com/).

Mate, you have atop notch Amiga there.   Don't sell it, you'll regret it.  unless you are REALLY desperate for cash that is.

You'll catch a few hundred bucks I reckon. Is that really worth it? I don't know your financial situation but that won't really do much to cure your financial situation in the long run I guess. So I think in the end you'll regret selling your Amiga if you really love it as much as you say.

My .02 .... Take a long, objective look at your financial situation... Is there something else that you could sell? Is your situation really that bad? Trust me, I know about financial troubles, I was laid off from a job after 17+ years... In all honestly, if it were not for my dad, (also a die-hard Amiga user :) ) I would have had to sell my Amiga stuff..
As Flashlab said, you may get a few hundred for it... with an '060, who knows.. you could get quite a bit...
BUT, think about it.... if you sell it, then decide some weeks/months/years later that you want your miggy back, you'll only find out that it's out of your reach.. e.g. too expensive, untested/too risky, broken, or just not available anymore...

I have only sold a few Amiga bits on EBay, Perfect Sound 3, MIDI interface, etc. , Yet I regret those little things...
I would have been better off keeping them, then to get the $50-60 I got for them.......
(Though I did set aside a DSS, and a Pyramid MIDI interface for myself  :-P

Spoke with a credit management agency a while back about selling stuff to make money.

In a nutshell they explained that selling off hobby objects is barely worth it, even for the short term.  Unless the money would completely settle a debt, you will just be postponing your inevitable position.  In a few short weeks you will be right back where you are now, minus a piece of your mental health.  (In other words, sell to settle debts, not to make payments.)

They recommended a debt management program in which the management agency negotiates a set repayment schedule on your behalf with your creditors.  In return, your creditors may lower your interest and/or forgive late fees.

If a debt management solution would not be feasible based upon your income versus your debt, and you're selling plasma and Amiga stuff just to make your bills, then they recommend bankruptcy.

In the US, bankruptcy has changed quite a bit, but mostly to prevent people from becoming habitual filers.  If your income can support your living expenses and your debt repayments, you are not allowed to file bankruptcy.  If you do file, you are required to take a debt management course, which is designed to evaluate your situation and help you make any corrections necessary to ensure you don't wind up in the same position again.

Believe me, it sucks, and you realize quite quickly how worthless all the shyt in your house really is.  My cats are worth $1 each, and my Amiga equipment (listed as "obsolete computers and electronics") are worth nothing.

Anyway, I know a number of people here have listed items for sale because they "need the cash."  Hopefully they're not throwing out their hearts to make minor mends.  For hobbyists like a lot of us here, the Amiga is a relaxing and fun interest which, unlike some things, is unlikely to be replaceable at a later time for a comparatively reasonable expense.

Good luck to everyone in such a situation.

Consideration is one thing Drew, actually doing it is totally different.

LoadWB gave good solid advice in his post, you should take it on-board and investigate a debt management solution as a first priority.

My 2c's worth ... IMO you would be far better off NOT selling. Not only will you regret it in the long run, but what happens when you want to replace? Will you be able to afford it? Or even find replacement items to the same specifications for that matter?

No, keep the Amiga ... it can do more than just play games, it can help you through even the darkest days :-)
