I don't know much about the viper cards but I don't think it has the equivalent of the Blizzards CyberPatcher. Seeing as you mainly want to play games I wouldn't worry about it much. There is a program called Oxypatcher that does the same job anyway.

I can honestly recommend a Blizzard 1260. I've had one for two years and it has given faultless performance. Games like Quake /Payback/Descent are feasable on it (only at low res). Workbench really flies with this card and loading up JPG's, decoding web pages are so much faster. Your 1200 really jumps in performance and multitasking between multiple programs suddenly becomes a reality. I really can't recommend it enough. Also, I would say it is much more compatible with older software than a 1240. I know this sounds bizzare, but its true! But that's not too relevant since we have whdload to install all those old games

@Flowman

If you can, buy a Blizzard even used on eBay.

Ciao

Personally, I'd go ahead with the Viper... Granted, you won't get the SCSI controller with it, but at least it's a new design by a company that currently exists. That and they're a hell of alot cheaper.

And if no one else around here uses it, you can give US a report  :-D

Depends on what you want. If you can live without SCSI then I'd go for the Viper. It's new and still produced and supported, so it will have a warranty. And for the price of second hand Blizzards you can almost buy a Viper one.
Performance will probably be the same, but there are no benchmarks so if you prefer, don't risk and ask the seller to run some benchmark tests before you buy. I bet the performance is the same though.

I didn't realise Vipers are still being produced and were available so cheaply. In that case, I would recommend a Viper '060

By cheap, how much are we talking here?  And where would be a good place to see about ordering one?  My poor little a1200 is still without an accelerator since my '030 died. =(

I live in the US, would there be any problems using one if I ordered it from overseas?

Get them from the source: http://www.vesalia.de (http://www.vesalia.de) current price at the time of this post is US$223.55 for the 060/50MHz and US$153.65 for the 040/40MHz.

It gets better...

I had a look at their shipping info page.  If you live outside the EU you get to deduct 16% German VAT.

So that makes a bare Viper 060/56 only USD $199!

(As of 22/08/03, excluding shipping and any customs fees).

My god, even I might be able to afford that...

But why is it listed at 56Mhz?  I guess it comes overclocked.  Not complaining.

@olegil:

Doh!  Hope it all gets sorted out.

Yeah, my avatar is indeed from Broadsword and the Beast.  Brilliant band Jethro Tull.  I was wondering if anyone would recognize it.  You obviously have taste!

I too shall wait for fragment's report.  Gives me time to look down the back of the couch for funds :)  The NZ dollar isn't so strong.

Hmm, my girlfriend is out of town at the moment.  Maybe I can save on soap...

Good price - with memory quoted last night $200 plus shipping - vat.  The price goes by exchange rate, when US dollar goes up the cost goes down.

Nooo! The 060 is less compatible with things like games or old demos than the 040.

They need to hurry up with the A4000 version... Granted there are more A1200 users, but still!
